WASHINGTON, Jan 7 -t* A re I
ported prediction by Atty. Gen
Brownell that President E'.senhow |
er yvill "come back and lead us foi
a lqng t'me" was interpreted b> |
some Republicans today as open j
ing' the door for a second terrr I
race.
Brownell was represented ir I
some quarters as having told the I
Republican Finance Committee in
a closed session here yesterday
tha$ he "assumes” Eisenhower will
run again.
On the other hand, some of those j
present at the session of GOP mon-
ey raisers said Brownell gave no
such personal expression.
There Was general agreement, I
however, that the attorney gener-j
al—who is one of the administra-1
tion's chief political strategists—
did tell the committeemen in a j
brief talk something like this:
"I can tell you the President is j
making a wonderful and complete i
recovery and he is on the eve of j
resuming the full load of the presi-
dency. I can bring you assurance
that the President will come b!
and lead us for a long time.”
Eisenhower, who has been vaca- j
tioning in Florida, will give his'
own report on the condition of his I
health at a news conference tomor- j
roW.
Brownell’s reported statements
were made at a time when some |
members of the committee were'
hipting they need some definite,
sijjn of the President’s intentions I
if they are to succeed in money j
raising efforts.
More than one of the members j
is said to have made it clear, that!
if Eisenhower isn’t going to run,
there would be less enthusiasm in'
raising money to finance the cam-
paign of some other—a id as yet
unknown—candidate.
Brownell’s reported prediction
that the President will "lead us
for a long time" was interpreted
by some of those present as indi-
cating that he had some informa- j
tion on a second term he didn't I
feel free to disclose.
On the other hand, others who'
heard his remarks said they could
mean only that the President in- I
tends to take a leading role in the I
campaign, even if he isn’t a candi- I
date himself.
■Eisenhower promised in a Dec. 1 I
message to the Republican Nation- I
a! Committee to “do everything in I
my power next year to help you I
report the (Republican i record ac- I
cqr'ately and fully to ihe country.” I
Brownell was said to have told I
the finance committeemen, headed ]
by investment banker Clifford Fol- I
ger, that he believes 1956 will be I
a year in which all of the party’s I
expectations will be fulfilled.
fclpe of those who listened said I
that, while Brownell didn’t make I
any direct reference to a second I
term bid, "he certainly didn't lean I
away from it all.”
