A. J. Lane, a Taylor County far-
mer, realized a profit of 800 per
cent in the hog business to less
than twelve months. In April of
last year Lane paid $10.00
each for two small, 5-week-old
gilts. Tbs animals were uot
registered, but were subject to
pedigree. They weighed less
than twenty-five pounds each
when Layne bought them.
Each of the sows before they
were a year old farrowed a litter
of pigs. Since tfce tiii*t of Jan-
uary Lane has sold ten pigs from
these two animals for $10 each,
or a total of $100. Re now has
two of the pigs left, for which he
bis been offered $15 a nead and
aLo the sows now value at $50
eich.
Figuring the pigs sold and the
present value of the animals still
ju haud, $20 has mads a olsai
profit of $160 iu less than twelve
mouths.
All feed oonsumed by the hogs
was home-grown. Thu animals
ware cared for in the spare tim<
of the membersof the Lane fam
liy and he ooasiders that he did
a very profitable piece of busi-
41 ness when he bought the twc
little pigs The two sows, just
now past a year old, will be kept
for breeding.
Lane has eighty native pecai
tress on his thirty-acre farm,
which adjoins Elm Creek. Hi
has also set out sixt papershch
trees on the farm. One of tht
native tree produced $52 worth
of nuts last season and auotber
made its $45, Line will top-
work the trees and insert piper-
shell buds in them this seeson.
Andrew Jackson Lane, knowi
here as “Uncle Andy" and lived
west of town on what he callet
“Buffio Hill", and here was hit
own introduction to this editor.
When he entered the door of out
Santum Santorium, heappearet
