Jehovah’s Witnesses make visitors welcome
when the message was finished.
I personally was exhausted from
trying to keep up. I wrote a 519-
word sentence trying to describe
it but have mercifully deleted it
here.
ust walking to the door
identified us as visitors with
outsider status. I wore tai-
lored dress slacks, boots and
blazer and my companion was
similarly clothed with a dress
shirt, jacket and slacks.
At the Jehovah’s Witnesses
meeting hall on Windsor Drive
in Denton, he should have had
on a dark suit and tie and I
should have been in a dress.
Which I don’t own.
With that marking of “new-
bie” all over us, many greeted us
enthusiastically. One ushered us
to seats on one side of the meet-
ing area, a low-ceilinged win-
dowless room lit by institutional
fluorescent lighting.
A small dais adorned with
nothing but a wooden lectern
and microphone, flanked by two
small screens, identified where
the speakers would stand. The
temperature in the room ranged
from too warm to too cold, never
quite settling on comfortable.
We guessed the room would
seat approximately 250 people.
Perhaps 150 (more for the first
part) gathered. Another identi-
cal room housed a different co-
hort of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Three other area groups share
that same building.
There is no Sunday school or
The singing seemed unen-
thusiastic.
At this point, a man identi-
fied as Brother Gay came to the
lectern for a 30-minute exposi-
tion on “The Promise of the Per-
fect Family”
During his exposition, Gay
referenced multiple Scriptures.
All come from the New World
Translation of the Holy Scrip-
tures, a translation unique to the

called upon. Several others, in-
cluding other women, had expe-
rienced multiple opportunities
to speak, but her request to par-
ticipate was not acknowledged
by the facilitator.
He did impressively possess
knowledge of everyone’s name
and was able to call out, “brother
this” and “sister that” with as-
tounding accuracy.
The service ended at 11:45
a.m. after another song and clos-
ing prayer. We were again del-
uged with many who greeted us,
filled our hands with written
materials, answered questions
and kindly offered to explain
theological terms to me.
I mentioned that I am a
trained theologian and had no
trouble understanding their ter-
minology.
They also tried in vain to sort
out the relationship that my
worship companion and I share.
I suspect they really hoped we
were married because of the em-
phasis on family.
Upon leaving, my compan-
ion said, “Am I reading the same
Bible they are reading?” I re-
marked that their translation
differs significantly from those
used in churches that profess

After the lecture, we stayed

The Watchtower, the official Je-

and from which they take their
primary teachings.
The sections for Sunday were
slowly read, paragraph by para-

paragraph, those in audience
were given opportunities to
comment on the writings with
comments expected to be short
and to the point.
Microphones were passed
around by the well-dressed male

read written comments, evi-

The adults, mostly middle-

small number of children and
teens, none of whom will ever
celebrate their birthdays, Christ-
mas or Easter if they wish to re-

At 10 a.m., a man ap-
proached the lectern, offered a
good morning and told us to
stand and sing hymn No. 75. I
saw no hymnbooks, but the per-
son sitting next to my compan-
ion offered him one. There were
no musical instruments visible.
A computer-based electronic pi-
ano provided the tune, melody
line only.
Later, I learned about a
smartphone app for the Jeho-
vah’s Witnesses that made it eas-
ier to move from spot to spot.
Before then, my companion
frantically flipped from place to
place in his borrowed Bible
while I wrote nonstop.
I counted 23 scriptures being
used — about one per minute —
each yanked from its historical/
theological/contextual settings.
Message theme: God wants us
to be happy in our families. The
primary means of happiness:
husbands in charge spiritually
and materially, wives in subjec-

birth.
I would never be a fit — but
many clearly are happy, secure
in their world and their under-
standing of the future they ex-
pect to have in the Kingdom of
Heaven.

VATICAN CITY - The Vat-
ican on Thursday unexpectedly
ended its controversial takeover
of the main umbrella group of
U.S. nuns, cementing a major
shift in tone and treatment of
U.S. sisters under the social jus-
tice-minded Pope Francis.
The Vatican said it had ac-
cepted a final report on its over-
haul of the Leadership Confer-
ence of Women Religious and
declared that the “implementa-
tion of the mandate has been ac-
complished” nearly two years
ahead of schedule.
When the Vatican’s Congre-
gation for the Doctrine of the
Faith took over the LCWR in
2012, it accused the group of tak-
ing positions that undermined
Catholic teaching on the priest-
hood and homosexuality while
promoting “certain radical femi-
nist themes incompatible with
the Catholic faith.”
It launched a five-year over-
haul to fix a “grave” doctrinal cri-
sis, fueled by concerns among
U.S. conservatives that the
group had strayed from church
teaching by not focusing enough
on issues like abortion and eu-
thanasia.
The Vatican appointed a
bishop to oversee the rewriting

baptism if it is an optional act for sinners? Truth be told, it is an
obligatory, rather than an optional act in order for one to re-
ceive forgiveness of sins and become a Christian. Why is this
so? This question leads to the Bible subject of blood atonement.

The principle of blood atonement for sin is clearly enunciat-
ed in many passages, but none clearer than the following: “...
apart from shedding of blood there is no remission” (Heb. 9:
22b). We first see this doctrine in Abel’s sacrifice in the shadow
of Eden; it continues in the altars of Noah, Job, Abraham, Isaac,
Jacob, and his descendants in Egypt. The Law of Moses was so
blood-related that “According to the law, I may almost say, all

Jesus’ blood can cleanse (1 Pet. 1:18-19; Rev. 1:5). Baptism in
water is the act ordained by the Lord in which sinners partake
tion for the coming kingdom (Mat. 3:2- 0f atoning benefits of His death in which He shed His blood
6; John 4:1-2). Jesus included it as part (R0m. 6:3-4; 1 John 2:2). Since baptism is the point of contact-
of His Gospel that is to be preached in
all the world (Mat. 28:19-20; Mark 16:
15-16). On Pentecost, when Peter first
preached the Gospel in its fullness, he
commanded sinners to be baptized, and
about 3,000 did so (Acts 2:38, 41).
