The Destination Imagina-
tion group at Navo Middle
School is selling sunglasses this
week to raise awareness about
accepting and embracing others’
differences.
The group launched “The
Look Project” campaign last fall.
For the last several months the
group has worked with deaf stu-
dents at McNair Elementary
School, learning through online
journal correspondence and in-
person interactions about what
they enjoy doing, about their
families and whether their rela-
tives can communicate through
sign language.
The Navo students have also
learned how cochlear implants
— an electronic device that pro-
vides sound to people who are
profoundly deaf or hard of hear-
ing — impact the lives of the
deaf students. The Destination
Imagination team is writing sto-
ries about those interactions.
The campaign is all part of a
project that the group is present-
ing at a regional competition lat-
er this month. Destination

The Destination Imagination team at Navo Middle School is selling sunglasses this week as
part of a project to raise awareness about accepting and embracing others’ differences.
Nancy Stockdale, a Universi-
ty of North Texas professor, will
talk about how World War I led
to the creation of the new Mid-
dle East next Monday.
dents to work together, think
critically, solve problems and de-
velop solutions to challenges.
This week’s sunglasses sale is
an extension of the project. The
glasses are being sold for $2 dur-
ing the three lunch periods.
Printed on an arm of the
glasses is the group’s program
name, “The Look Project,” and
the sign language symbol for
‘look.” People who purchase a
pair are invited to participate in
an aerial photo Friday in which
they will wear the sunglasses
and spell out “Look” on the
school lawn.
Proceeds will support the
team’s contest expenses. The
group is also planning to host a
dance and set up a booth at a fu-
ture school pep rally to raise ad-
ditional funds.
‘We’re trying to tell our peers
and community to look at peo-
ple from a different perspective,”
said Colton Page, a Destination
Imagination team member at
Navo.
The sunglasses are being sold
through the end of the week. For
more details or to make a dona-
tion, visit the group’s Instagram
page, @TheLookProject.DI, or
call team coach Trina Page at

Temporarily closing
university proposed
ing enrollment, along with a
drop in state funding and feder-
al changes that made many stu-
dents ineligible for grants.
Continued questions over
South Carolina State Universi-
ty’s ability to get its finances in
order prompted a House bud-
get-writing panel to propose
temporarily closing the state’s
only public historically black
college.
While the idea prompted a
firestorm of debate, it appears
doomed. Even if it eventually
makes it into the House's budget
proposal, Senate leaders have
made clear they won’t go for it.
Still, the stunner points to law-
makers’ rising frustrations.
The proposal “has sent
shockwaves throughout this
university community. It has in-
cited worry and panic,” said Uni-
versity President Thomas Elzey,
who took the school’s helm in
mid-2013, in a statement late
Tuesday. “I want to make one
thing clear. SC State will not
close.”
