AMERICA--The nation whose
rich and diverse culture is tinged
with color from the past of many
lands.
Some cookbooks on the shelves
of the Seagraves Branch of the
Gaines County Library are
historical tributes to the heritage
of the people. Customs and tastes
of people in other lands are
expressed in the cookbooks.
One interesting book is
“Capitol Cook Book”, compiled
by Sue Creighton of Mineral
Wells" It includes “Favorite
Family Recipes of Texas
Governors, Senators and other
State Officials”, published in
1973. On the fly leaf for the book
are these words:
“The five sections of this book
reveal delectable dishes that
have been served to world
famous celebrities and
dignitaries at private and state
functions in the1 homes of state
officials and in the Governor’s
wife, dating back to Mrs. Dan
Moody in 1928, each lady senator,
the wife of each State Senator,
and the ..wives of other state
officials who have served Texas
since 1960--up to and including
the 62nd legislature of 1973, when
Dolph Briscoe was governor.”
Sue Creighton’s husband, Tom,
is a practicing lawyer, and he
served as a Texas State Senator
representing the 22nd Senatorial
District from 1961 to....'
AN ANTIQUE
One of the first accession?
placed in the Gaines Count}
Museum and Art Center
Seagraves-Loop Division, was a
rare “White House Cookbook,”
published in 1889.
A Texan, Mrs. H.L. (Patsy)
Walser was on vacation with her
family the summer of 1973. While
in Pheonix, Ariz., her mother,
Mrs. Lefty Faulkner, who was
with the family and an avid
garage sale fan, insisted they
stop at a sale. Patsy saw the book
and paid the price asked, $5.00!
The cover of the hard back
book was probably white at one
time, but age is causing
deterioration. A full page picture
of the beautiful wife of President
Grover Cleveland, Frances
Folsom Cleveland is near the
front of the book. They were
married in the White House, and
Grover Cleveland was elected
again, after defeat in 1889. He
served again from 1893 to 1897
The hook was written and
compiled by Mrs. F.L. Gillette.
Other pictures are in the book of
First Ladies who served in the
White House prior to 1889.
Containing 503 pages, there are
tempting recipes, and the
author’s shopping, storage and
cooking directions are quite
clear.
Some recipes are from noted
are many “facts worth
kirfbwing”.. There is no
advertising in the book.
TK LASIIRLS-The old blue
book on my recipe shelf is not
used as frequently as it was when
children were growing up at our
house. The late G.L. Farrar was
school superintendent when I
first was in a home economics
class at Wellington High School.
I not only learned recipes I used
through the years hut some
canning, and many other things I
have long forgotten.
There are several “treasures”
on that shelf. One-’‘Cooking
Round the World and at Home”
was published by Methodist
Women, ‘ later members of
Women’s Society of Christian
Service. The cookbook came
from my mother, Mrs. J.W.
Bandy, Sr., and there are copies
of many recipes of friends, some
who continue to live in
Seagraves.
“Rice-200 Delightful Ways to
.Serve It” is a relic from the
Texas Centennial celebration in
Dallas in 1936. Rice, at that time
was considered “The
Economical Food”.
Added to the collection on my
shelf is a bicentennial project,
published in 1976 by the Quincy,
ILL., American Revolution
Bicentennial Commission.
Names of some foods are first
printed in German
Lots of good recipes are in the
Loop Community Cookbook,
published by the Loop Future
Homemakers of America, with
Betty (Davis) Morgan jis
sponsor. Many of the
contributors still live in the Loop
Community.
Last, but not least, and
showing lost of use is “The
Cresle Kitchen Cookbook,” a
wedding gift in 1946 from Mrs.
Neal C. Vanzant.
Compiled by Virginia M.
Cooper of New Orleans, most of
the recipes were from her own
books that had been tried.
• Jellied Prunes,”
“Strawberry Parfait,” “Upside
Down Cake,” and rhiscellanious
dishes, including thost -listed as:
“Chinese,” “Italian,"
“Spanish,” “Russion,” and
others all sound de-licious.
Be prepared. A People Talk
will be, within the next few
weeks, about one person in
Seagraves, her recipe books, and
how she learned to cook.

CANKER AND MOUTH SORES
Millions of men, women and children
regularly suffer the annoyance and
discomfort of mouth and canker
sores. While the exact cause has not
been determined, research is
underway to expand our knowledge
of their origin and possible
treatment. Canker sores generally
last from one to twenty-one days,
tend to be recurrent and rarely leave
scars. Canker sores are also known
by the medical term ''aphthous
stomatitis''. They are tiny round or
oval ulcers and arae usually grayish
white with a bright red ridge. They
form inside the mouth and
frequently appear in groups.
“Herpes simplex" is a completely
different disease than aphthous
stomatitis. Although it may
occasionally look like a canker sore,
herpes simplex is now known to be
an unrelated viral infection. Canker
sores can be soothed with
medication.
As an expert in drugs and
medications you should seek your
pharmacist's advice when looking for
a non-prescription medication. This
is particularly important if you are
taking more than one medicine at a
time whether they are prescription
or non-prescription. Your
pharmacist at LOWRII DRUG is
always ready with professional
advice when you need it. In addition
to everything you would expect to
find in a drug store we carry ether
items such es jewelry, stuffed
annuals, china, crystal and much
mere. Come into 200 W, Ave. A,
7SB-363B. Open: Mon. - Sat. 9 *.
