FRIDAY JULY 5TH, 1*46
WHAT DOES THE RETURNED
SOLDIER SEE?
(Continued From Page 1 )
tics and bureaucratic restrictions,
is an invitation to the returned soldier
to direct his energy to the job of re-
claiming the United States as a land
of opportunity where government is
the servant and the individual is the
master-the kind of a land that our
first Fourth of July commemorated.
As a nation we have always been able
to marshal our resources and fight for
independence in an unselfish manner.
Is it impossible for us !to follow this
same course to preserve a sound and
prosperous nation in peacetime-
No political philosophy yet advanced
can compare with the dream of our
forefathers who asked only for a land
dedicated to life, liberty and the pur-
suit of happiness, the dearest possess-
ion of every American citizen.

THE LOW DOWN FROM HICK-
ORY GROVE
You know, try as hard as I can, I
can’t get over the idea that what our
U. S. A. needs is gold wampum. We
gotta start some place if we are to get
away from the chaos that the Big
Squawks in Govlt. keep saying is around
the corner, and will consume us if we
don’t keep these present fellows in just
a little longer.
W hy not change the Squawks, says
Henry—maybe that ails us versus hav-
ing no gold dinero.
I will not get into politics too deep,
I says, but maybe you got something
there. But if Uncle George Washington
laid a solid kind of foundation for a U.
S. A. and used hard money for same,
you gotta admit that gold and silver
didn t hurt—and maybe helped. Also,
it didn t breed 100 kinds of chaos. And
furthermore, I says, trying to be half-
way humorous and cheer Henry up,
do you think, I says, thalt Mr. Wash-
ington could have thrown a dollar
across the Potomac if it had been pe-
per. Well, says Henry, throwing one
silver dollar across the river don’t hold
a candle to what they can do now, with
paper. They throw a couple billion
across or into the river before break-
fast. Thalt, I says, shows why they hold
back on making gold legal—it is too
heavy to shovel it out so easy.
Yours with the low' down,
JO SERRA
