WASHINGTON <&) Thousands
of refugees from communism
could be admitted to the United
States under provisions of an im-
migration bill approved by the
Senate Judiciary Committee.
The measure would amend the
McCarran - Walter Immigration
Act, and would permit broader
use of1 18.565 v ias left over from
the 1953 Refugee Relief Act which
expired last Dec. 31.
This would open the way for
admission of persons fleeing com-
munism, or persecution in the
Middle East.
Except for that refugee provi-
sion, the Senate bill approved yes-
terday closely resembles a meas-
ure approved last week by the
House Judiciary Committee.
Neither bill would grant perma-
nent residence to Hungarian ref-
ugees admitted on an emergency
basis last fall. By this, the com-
mittee ignored a major adminis-
tration request, along wdtn other
key immigration recommenda-
tions made by President Eisen-
hower.
Congressional leaders plan to
try to pass the bill this year.
Under the House bill, the visas
left over from the 1953 law would
be available only for the use of
groups to which they were origi-
nally assigned, mostly Germans
expelled from behind the Iron Cur-
tain and now living in West Ger-
many and Austria, and refugees
in the Netherlands.
But the Senate bill would make
I 2,500 of the visas available to ex-
j pelled Germans. 1,600 to refugees
| in Holland, and 500 to refugees
in the Far East.
The remaining visas would be
available on a worldwide basis for
any refugees from communism or
those fleeing racial, religious and
political persecution in the Middle
East.
Both House and Senate bills
contain provisions designed to re-
( unite families of immigrants who
I came to this country leaving rel-
! atives behind.
