Lawyers who used an “af-
fluenza” defense for a Texas
teenager in a fatal 2013 drunk-
en-driving wreck have failed to
secure his release from jail.
The Texas Supreme Court
denied the request Thursday
for 20-year-old Ethan Couch,
who was 16 when his crash
killed four people near Fort
Worth.
Couch received 10 years pro-
bation after pleading guilty to
intoxication manslaughter and
other juvenile charges. A de-
fense expert used the term “af-
fluenza” during trial, suggesting
Couch was coddled into a sense
of irresponsibility by his wealthy
parents.
After an online video ap-
peared to show Couch at a par-
ty where people were drinking,
Couch and his mother briefly
fled to Mexico in December
2015.
A Central Texas sheriff is
taking a novel approach to
solving cold cases by assem-
bling a team of retired investi-
gators to voluntarily work on
high-profile cases dating back
nearly 40 years.
Williamson County Sheriff
Robert Chody tells KVUE-TV
and the Austin American-
Statesman the volunteers have
previous experience investigat-
ing homicides and other major
crimes across Central Texas.
Retired officers commonly
serve as reservists who help pa-
trol streets and perform admin-
istrative functions, but it’s un-
usual for them to work unsolved
homicides.
Chody, who took office in
January, is hoping the volunteer
team can shake loose new leads
and information on about 10 un-
solved killings in the county.
He says they could see evi-
dence differently or spot some-
thing that prior investigators
may have missed.
