The 512 Slice CT Scanner has added upgraded cardiac diagnostic imaging.
Over the last few years, some of the big-
gest improvements to the facility at Texas
Health Presbyterian Hospital Denton have
benefitted the medical imaging depart-
ment.
The hospital can now olfer cardiac CT
for calcium screenings which is a non-in-
vasive scan to check for buildup of calcium
in plaque on the walls of the arteries of the
heart.
Cardiac diagnostic imaging was up-
graded significantly with the arrival of a
512-slice computed tomography (CT) scan-
ner, which has been beneficial to both pa-
tients and physicians on the medical staff.
As opposed to a traditional service, the new
scanner has an 82% reduction in radiation
and offers 160mm of coverage - four times
the industry standard.
trained employees allow Texas Health Den-
ton to provide the needed services for Den-
ton and surrounding communities. The
residents do not have to leave the area for
their diagnostic services.
“It’s great with continuity of care and lo-
cation,” Velez said. “If they have a CT scan or
an MRI or a mammography done here all
of the images are stored in the same loca-
tion, and read by the same group of physi-
cians. Almost any test their physicians
would order can be done in-house, so it’s
convenient.”
Velez also mentioned the department’s
increase in service offerings for interven-
tional radiology. This is a sub specialty of
radiology that medical staff (physicians)
perform minimally invasive procedures to
diagnosis and treat diseases in nearly every
organ system.
“Having a larger physician group here
with skilled, board certified interventional
radiology physicians on the medical staff is
going to set us apart,” Velez said. “Offering
more for the community and what we can
do through an interventional procedure
that’s minimally invasive is going to be sig-
nificant.”
New equipment has been added under
Director of Medical Imaging Cardell Velez,
who was been with the hospital for a year
and a half.
The Breast Center has added a new 3-D
mammography unit - it has aided in de-
tecting cancers earlier due to its technology.
The department also provides 3D stereo-
tactic biopsies that can be performed in the
upright position and bone density screen-
ings.

“The mammography program is ac-
credited through the American College of
Radiology (ACR) - as well as our nuclear
medicine, CT and magnetic resonance im-
aging (MRI) programs.” “It’s the gold stan-
dard,” Velez said.
Texas Health Denton also boasts ex-

Employees are pleased that they have the new 3D mammography technology
which aids in detecting cancer earlier.
