Grant’s Galena tannery was a myth,
asserts E. H. Avery in a communication
to the New York Tribune. He says:
“Grant & Son were leather dealers in
Galena, but not leather makers there.
Their tanning was done elsewhere,
mostly in Kentucky, and the stock was
kept for sale in the Illinois town. In the
interest of simple truth it ought to be
known that General Grant was not a Ga-
lena tanner.”

charged with the duty of employing labor upon
the streets and alleys, and upon other work that,
mav he under his superintendence, to the number
prescribed by the City Council, or under its direc-
tion, and for the compensation fixed by the City

charged with the duty of employing all necessary
labor in his department, subject to the limitation
to be prescribed by the Council, as to the num-
ber of employees or workingmen and the compen-
sation to be paid them.

1884. Section 1. Be it ordained by the City
Council of the City of Galyeston, that
Section I of an ordinance entitled
“An ordinance amendatory of Section
5, Article. I, Chapter 2, Title 3, of the Re
vised .Ordinances of the City of Galveston,”
approved September 3,1884, be and is hereby
amended so as to hereafter read as follows:
Section I. Be it ordained by the City Council
of the city of Galveston, that Section 5, Article
I, Chapter 2, Title 3, be and is hereby amended so
as to hereafter read as follows:
Section 5. It shall not he lawful for any pen-on
in building or repairing any house, store or fence,
to lay or place bricks, boards, or timber, or other
materials for building, in the streets more than

a manner as to occupy more than one-third part

to be placed in conspicuous places in front of and
about such obstruction or excavations from dark
until sunrise each night during the time such ob-
structions or excavations continue. And, also
provided further, that it shall not be lawful for
aiiy person or persons using such portion of such
streets for the purposes mentioned above, to ob-
struct or close up the gutters on said street, but
that they must keep the same clear and open and
free from trash during such time as the street is
being occupied bv them. Any person or persons
offending against the provisions of this ordinance
shall be subjeet to a fine of five dollars for every
day such offence is continued.

domicil in the city of Hempstead, Waller county,

Section 1. Any merchant, grocer,_ or dealer in
wares and merchandise, or trader in any lawful
business whatever, who shall barter or sell on Sun-
day between the hours of nine o’clock a. m., and
four o’clock p. m., shall he fined not less than twen-
ty nor more than fifty dollars.
Section 2. The preceding section shall not apply
to the sale of burial or shrouding material, drugs,
medicine, ice, milk, newspapers and the sending
to the Ahrenbeck Oil Company the improvements
thereon at the date of the execution of said deed of
trust being a four Calahan press cotton seed oil mill
in first class running order, with all neces-
sary machinery connections, tanks, tools and
buildings for a mill of such size, and with steam and
engine power sufficient for a mill of double its size,
and a cotton gin building with four giL stands, two
presses and engine and all necessary connections,
etc., for a first class ginning establishment; and cot-
ton seed sheds, wagon scales and office buildings
and furniture, together with all such other buildings
appurtenances and improvements then on said lot
or to be thereafter placed on same, and,
Whereas, it is provided in said deed of trust
that if said Ahrenbeck Oil Co. should make de-
fault for thirty days in the payment of said in-
debtedness, or of the interest thereon as the same
shall mature and become payable, or in the pay-
ment of any and all taxes that may be assessed
and levied upon said property, or to keep said
property insured for a sum not less than the

Section 3. It shall be the duty of such Purchasing
Agent to contract for and purchase all material and
supplies except that for which the Council may
award contracts, that may be needed by the different
departments and officers of the city and within the
limits and conditions that may he prescribed by the
City Council, but same shall be done in conformity
with Section2 of this ordinance.
Section 4. The Purchasing Agent, shall upon the re-
quisition of the heads of the different departments,
that is to say of the Engineer, Chief Engineer of the
Fire Department, City Clerk, Health Physician and
Chief of Police, or upon the order of the City Coun-
cil purchase the articles . or supplies required, ap-
proving the bills or accounts therefor, and filling the
same for the action of the appropriate committees.
Section 5. The Purchasing Agent shall contract
for all supplies needed for the city’s use at first or
wholesale hands, as far as the same may be practica-
ble, and where a considerable quantity of any article
is needed for regular use he shall publish in the of-
ficial journal an advertisement calling for bids to
furnish such supplies, and all bids shall be made to
and opened by the City Council, and the City Coun-
cil shall award the right to furnish such article to the
lowest and best bidder, which arrangement shall be
for the municipal year, or such shorter period as may
be agreed on. Tbe object being to obtain such ma-
terial and supplies as may be needed at regular and
res8^tten6PriIte8hall further be the duty of the Pur-
chasing Agent to make contracts for work and re-
pairs that may be necessary to be done and that are
not under the immediate supervision of the City En-
gineer and the Health Physician, as provided for m
Section 2 of this ordinance.
Section 7. The Purchasing Agent shall keep prop-
per books and accounts which shall show all the
transactions had by him and the business of his office.
And he shall make monthly reports to the City Coun-
cil or oftener if required, which reports together
with his books shall be examined and reported upon
by the Auditor, and such books and papers of hi s of-
fice shall at all times he subject to the inspection of
the Mayor and Aldermen and committee on claims
and accounts, or any person appointed by them for
Section 8. ’ The Purchasing Agent shall enter a
bond with two or more sureties to be approved by the
City Council m the sum of Twenty Thousand ($20-
000) Dollars, conditioned for the faithful perform-
ance of the duties of his office, and for his services he
shall receive a salary of One Hundred and- Fifty
($150) Dollars per month.
Section 9. An ordinance entitled: “An ordinance
constituting, empowering and designating certain
oflicers of the city of Galveston as Purchasing Agents’
passed June 15th, 1885, and all other ordinances or
resolutions in conflict with the provisions of this or-
dinance are hereby repealed.
Section 10. Upon the expiration of the term of

the City of Galveston as purchasing agents.
Be it ordained by the City Council of the City of

f the said city, Article XIX, Section 158, as amend-
ed by the Nineteenth Legislature of the State of
Texas, it is hereby made the duty of the following

A N ORDINANCE GRANTING THE RIGHT
UX- of way to the Gulf. Colorado and Santa Fe
Railway Company on Strand street, between
29th and 27th streets.
Section 1. Be it ordained by the City Council of
the city of Galveston.
That the right of way upon Strand street (or
Avenue B) from (29th) 1 wenty-ninth street, east to
(27tli) Twenty-seventh street and across the inter-
vening streets for the purpose of constructing
maintaining-and operating a steam railway with all
necessary ard proper sidings, is hereby granted to
the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway Company.
Section 2. The rights and privileges' aforesaid
are granted to said company upon the condition that
the construction of said railway shall be commenced
within (30) thirty days and shall be completed with-
in (90) ninety days after the passage of this ordi-
nance. Provided the contemplated sidings may be
made at anv time during the existence oi this grant.
And upon the further condition that the track shall
be laid upon the south side of said street on a line
parelell to track now laid on said street between SCtli
and 29th streets, and that the said company shall
fill Strand street and its intersections over which
the right of way is hereby granted, to grade satisfac-
tory to the City Council; shall build and maintain
culvert on (28th) Twenty-eighth street substantially
to conform to those now in use, and maintain said
culvert in good order; shall keep the street used in
good order", and sliall so construct the track and sid*
mgs that the ties shall be bedded in and the track
planked between the- rails level with the top of the
rail, and plank shall he ulaced out side of the rails
flush to top of rail on each side of the entire length
of track; and shall construct and keep in repair all
necessary culverts and sluices along said track as
the natural lay of the land may require for the nec-
essary drainage thereof; and construct' and main-
tain all crossings on a grade to accommodat e wagr
gon traffic as the city engineer may direct. And if
said company shall fail to perform.'said conditions

bonds has been so due and payable for more than

wholly made default for that space of time
to pay the same or cause the same to be paid;
and, whereas, the said Ahrenbeek Oil Co.
has failed to pay the taxes due on said property

trust, whereby said entire indebtedness has imme-
diately matured and become due and payable, now
therefore, by virtue of the power in me vested by
said deed of trust, and in accordance with the pro-

sell at public auction, to the highest bidder, for
cash, on the hereinbefore described premises, in
Brenham, Washington county, Texas, between the

scribed and wiil make such title to the purchaser as
