population"trends ... \
When we get to ththking about
water and what ip means to our
future growth and expansion we
naturuly wonder about what our
population will ha in 1070 or even
1880. That is a tough question. We
do know, of course, that we an
going to need more water then we
have today becauaa our population
seems to be gaining month by
month. If we gain ns some other
‘educational centers of the aountry
have moved forward then we had
better be giving extra time and
thought about our water supply.
Deep wells could be the answer.
It has been in other. places. On
the other hand, if we move upward
to the 20,000 population bracket
within the next 26 years then we
had better be slow about deciding
on the sources we can draw front.
Right now the deep wells will be
the most ecomonical because we
already have 16 of) them finished
and on pumps. Briefly, defeat we
would like to see the cii^uo is to
engage the best engineering firm
it can find to make a survey of
our problem, and let them tell us
what is best for us. There are so
many ways to look at this picture
that it is difficult to form a con-
clusion without using lots of time
and plenty of space, at least as far
as newspaper publicity is concern-
ed.

BIG STEP FORWARD . , . The
project the city is now getting
ready to start i**n important one
for water patrons. We are gf>ing
to have at least two more deep
wells, more reservoir storage,
more above the ground storage
and better distribution. Wo will
need it next spring and summer.
Unless something goes wrong all
these added facilities will be ready
for use by the time hot weather
gets here. That will relievo the
emergency that we had last sum-
mer when the pumps and the dis-
tribution system simply could not
handle the load. These improve-
ments are being made at a cost
of al»out $175,000—and without
any raise in property taxes. Wo
can thank our lucky stars that we
are getting these emergency im-
provements started.

WORKING TOGETHER . . .
The results of a bond election in
Fort Worth the past week gave
evidence of the benefits that corns
to any town when everybody ia
working hand in hand toward the
same goal. Fort Worth has plenty
of water today—but its loader*
*hd engineering technicians were
looking down the road about 20
years. This rule of cooperation
works in almost, every other W*y
a* f|*r as town building is concern-
ed, Qne striking example w* ob-
serve is the smalt number of {qc*
merchants who use the advertis-
ing column* of the focal papers.
W* know, eouree, that then are
any number of ways to spend our
advertising dollars. We are not
•elfish enough to say that alt the
advertising budget should be sot
up for the newspapers. We do sag,
however, and with all emphasis
that tf ev*ry merchant in Stephe*-
ville was spending * nominal sum
for newspaper advertising that tha
volume of busi*o«i We would b*
far greater tha* it is today. Thor*
Witt tt* considerable business in all
Otar »tore* during the Christmas
holidays regardless of what is done
*k°ut advertising, But what about
toxt spring? Th* buying public
notions the absence of advertising
meiangoa of Cpr merchants. Often
Bum wonder Why. A*d we do, too.
(| the 0*h»WM of th* local news-
papers carried no advertising for
the next *ix months StephenviUe
would be domed aa a diping tow*.
It acta that quick. Advertising
merchants are the ones who are
building Dallas, Fort Worth—and
Staph**ville. Working with deter-
mmation toward a common goal
will pay hahdaome dividends.
GOOD WORK, FRANK .
Out at A hi lane where ns many
grant-things have boon accomplish-
ed during recent years we note that
Frank Grimes of tho Reporter-
News announces that be has com-
pleted 45 active years on that
publication. He has been a cub re-
porter, a managing editor, editor-
ial writer and Just about every-
thing also required on a modern,
aptodate newspaper. One of the
biggest contributions he has made
to the city, in his opinion, was
arousing the public to the need of
g planning committee for a master
forward movement. Zoning, build-
ing codes, proper regulations on
all typos of construction—iaoiud-
tng plenty of water—all came from
his constant plugging in the news
columns of his newspaper and hi*
wise leadership as president of the
Chamber of Commerce. There are
many towns in Texas that could
well afford to follow the example
established by the Matchless City
of Abilene. Mr. Grimes deserves
commendation for his wise assist-
ance with a big program. Like-
wise, congratulations are in order
for a long tenure of excellent ser-
vice as a newsman. Texas and
America needs more men like
Frank Grimes.
