SURROUNDED BY A VARIETY of merchandise the owner* and
operators pf E-Z Loan and Jewelry, Jo and Joe Smith, have a
friendly greeting to customers-who enter their store.
E-Z Loan & Jewelry,
changes the image
of old pawn shops
Joe and Jo Smith have own-
ed and operated E-Z Loan and
Jewelry for 12 years in Aransas
Pass and have recently purch-
ased the old hank building
downtown at the corner of
Commercial and Goodnight.
They remodeled the building
• and moved iq during Novem-
ber of 1990. '
Smith said the investment
in the building is only one of
the ways they are trying like

indeed an alternative to tradi-

As an example, Mrs. Smith

items in the store are on sale.
“It’s our annual oash and
carry sale. All of our out of
pawn gold jewerly and di-

price,” she said.

industry’s image enhance-

“The strength of our busi-
ness is based on our good
name, and the goodwill we ex-
tend to our customers,” Smith
said.
Either Mr. or Mrs. Smith and
one employee, Everett Elkina,
who has been employed there
fpr several years, will greet cus-
tomers at the store and offer
help to those in need of a loan.
Elkina has over 20 years ex-
perience in electronics and
has his own TV/VCR repair ser-
vice in the pawn shop.
Mrs. Smith said, “thedisplay
of our retail items are pre-
sented well in our new store

Mrs. Smith said.
“Also, we have new mer-
chandise suoh as oostume and
gold jewelry, musical instru-
ments, and accessories,” she
added.
Smith began in the pawn
shop business after 23 yeers in
the Army.
“I have never enjoyed any-
thing more in my life than I do
this business. I’d like to take
this opportunity to say thanks
to all our customers, and invite
everyone to visit a pawn shop, ”
he said.
With today’s pawn broken

state and closely monitored by
law enforcement, the mer-

amount of certificates so that
more street* can be included in
phase III. Mrs. Moore said she
thought Phase 111 is a very big
project and the oity may not be
able to do anything like this for
another five years so the council
should consider doing additional
streets.
City Manager Rick Ewaniszyk
said Phase III Involves 75 percent
of the oity. He said that with #4.5
million the oity can do all the
