“Contributions to the Amer-
ican Cancer Society in Texas rep-
resent one of the best returns on
the dollar that I know of,” said
Joan Gagnon, chairman of the
American Cancer Society’s 1992
educational and fund-raising
Community Crusade “Light’s
On” in Aransas Pass, Port Aran-
sas and Ingleside.
“Light’s On” is scheduled
tomorrow. For more information
or to volunteer call 758-8585.
In preparing for the April Com-
munity Crusade, Gagnon feels it
is important for residents to know
how the society invests their con-
tributions.
Contributions raised in 1991-
92 will be invested as follows, 32%
to cancer research, 24% to public
education, 20% for patient ser-
vices, 8% for professional educa-
tion, 13% for fund-raising, and 3%
for program development/admi-
nistration.

with what contributors are in-
terested in supporting,” Gagnon
said. “And, as these figures show,
we are concentrating our efforts
on fulfilling our mission to sup-
port research, education and ser-
vices to patients.”
American Cancer Society
programs are delivered and admi-
nistered primarily through
voluteers.
“Volunteers help maintain
these impressive figures, and
volunteers are responsible for the
success we’ve had here ijt the Tri-
City Unit,” Gagnon said.

Historical commission to meet
Tales of days gone by will be on
tap for the regular meeting of the
San Patricio County Historical
Commission meeting for April.
The meeting will be at 9:30 a.m.
April 14 at the Blackland Museum
in Taft. New community exhibits
will be available for inspection.
Stories about mud, oil, hound
dogs and folks will be recounted,
according to Keith Guthrie com-
mission chairman.
The meetings are open to the
public. Anyone with a story- will
get a chance to share it.
Since it is a time of wet weather
in San Patricio County, perhaps
someone can top the story about
the ingenious dairy farms back in
the days before there was any
pavement.
Since the company (Coleman-
Fulton Pasture Company) had
several large herds of dairy cattle
scattered through the area, it was
necessary to get the fresh milk
into the creamery every day, re-
gardless of the weather.
Since the Model-Ts and the old
Reo trucks couldn’t make it
through the heavy, black mud,
the dairy farmers built sleds and
hitched teams of mules to them to
insure that the milk got through.
The local wags swore that part of
the milk was produced by Hol-
stein cows.
