Families wanted: to train leader dogs
Four families are being sought
to commit a year to help train
leader dogs for the blind.
Dr. and Mrs. Tom Skinner have
already found one family to take
one of the puppies, but they still
have four to go. The Skinners will
donate their dogs to the school for
leader dogs for the blind in
Rochester, Michigan. The dogs
are donated to the school and are
placed with the blind at no
charge.
The dogs, black German
shepherds, are now^tfiree months
old. There are two males and two
females that need to be placed
with foster families who will have
them -for approximately a year.
Foster families are expected to
completely socialize and obedi-
ence train the dogs and get them
accustomed to living in an en-
vironment with people.
The foster family will be ex-
pected to take their dog out on the
streets, in heavy traffic, riding in
elevators, climbing stairs, and to
public places, anywhere a person
needs to go.
Mrs. Skinner says the most “de-
sirable” family to take one of the
dogs would be one with children
and other animals, “but this is not
set in concrete, ” but it makes for a
good environment because the
dogs have to learn to be compati-
ble with other animals and totally
non-agressive. She said they
must live within the household,
not out in the yard. Mrs. Skinner
describes the dogs as “very out-
going, very friendly.”
She also notes that for the adv-
anced student who needs com-
munity service on his or her re-
sume, this is a good program. The
Skinners provide a great deal of
experienced support for foster
families.
Persons interested may call Dr.
Skinner’s office, 758-2722, or
their residence, 643-4541.

The Skinners have donated
dogs to the school before, but in
1988-89 they received approval
to give a new litter of dogs, four of
them, their initial training local-
ly. A number.of Aransas Pass
families were involved in that
program.
Of the four, two did not pass the
initial training and two went on to
Rochester. When a dog is dropped
from the initial training or from
the training in Rochester, the fos-
ter family is given an opportunity
to keep the dog.
