“Many mass shooters have
gone looking for people to
get in a shootout with. It’s a
pretty widely accepted part
of their psychological profile.
Having armed teachers is
not going to stop many of
them, because they are more
than likely hoping to get in a
shootout.

VBikes leaving city; Spin

VBikes notified the city gov-
ernment that the company will
not participate in Denton’s bike-
share pilot program and is re-
moving its bikes from Denton,
according to a staff report to the
City Council on Friday after-
noon.
— Matt Crosslin,
on DentonRC.com
“I’m a gun owner and I
shoot. I take my 13-year-old
grandsons to the range. I
understand guns. A handgun
against an AR isn’t going to
end well, The attitude that
more guns will will reduce
gun violence needs to
change.
Former council candidate
arrested on assault charge
The council approved an or-
dinance for the pilot program
last month. The ordinance goes
into effect Tuesday.
VBikes placed about 60 bikes
around the city last summer,
renting them through a smart-
phone application. Other com-
panies have asked the city about
the program, including Spin, Ii-
meBike and Ofo. So far, only
Spin has stated that it plans to
submit an application, city staff
said.
According to the affidavit, offi-
cers saw a red mark on the man’s
back where Gillespie allegedly
hit him.
Officers arrested Gillespie on
a charge of assault family vio-
lence. She was taken to Denton
City Jail and was released by Fri-
day evening.
Gillespie ran for the Denton
City Council Place 4 seat in 2017,
but lost to John Ryan.
Police responded to a call
about 3 p.m. Thursday about
someone violating a protective
order. According to a police re-
port, the caller said a man went
into the home of a woman he al-
legedly beat up the week before.
The caller also said the 37-year-
old woman had taken out a pro-
tective order that said the man
couldn’t come within 500 feet of
her home.
When officers contacted the
woman, she wouldn’t let them
search the apartment, the report
said. Police obtained a search
warrant and found the man hid-
ing behind a cardboard box in
the attic.
The man was arrested and
charged with violating a protec-
tive order.

local business owner Dawn Gil-

night after her husband claimed
she punched him at their south
Denton home.
According
to an arrest af-
fidavit, officers
responded to a
domestic dis-
turbance at
11:55
Thursday in
the 800 block
of Sandpiper Drive. When po-
lice arrived, they noticed broken
glass, pieces of a stove and other
household items strewn across
the floor, the affidavit said.
The 37-year-old victim said
he and Gillespie, 32, got into an
argument earlier that night after
she returned from Lucky Locks
salon. Gillespie previously
owned the salon, but told offi-
cers she had just sold the busi-
ness, according to the affidavit.
The man told officers he
went to bed about 10 p.m., but
Gillespie came into his room in-
toxicated and started hitting
him. The man recorded audio of
the interaction and police said
Gillespie could be heard yelling
and hitting him, the affidavit
said.
