Extension Pecan Committee
hosted the annual Comanche
County Pecan Show this past
Friday, December 5th at the
Comanche Community Cen-
ter. Dr. Tommy Thompson,
Pecan Research Geneticist -
USDA, served as the Pecan
Show Judge for this year's
show. Dr. Thompson is au-
thor of a number of pecan
papers and books including
"Pecan Cultivars: Past and
Present".
Although there are not
many pecans this year the
quality is very good. Dr.
Thompson commented on
the high quality of the entries
in this year's pecan show.
The Commercial Divi-
sion features pecan varieties
that are typically found in
commercial orchards and are

to pecan shellers. This year’s
Commercial Division had
entries in the Caddo, Chey-
enne, Pawnee, Sioux and
Wichita varieties. Paul Muh-
le exhibited the 1st place
entry and Womack Nursery
exhibited the second place
Caddo. In the Cheyenne
class Sorrells Pecans re-
ceived 1st place and Womack
Nursery received 2nd place.
Sorrells Pecans placed 1st
in the Pawnee division and
their Pawnee entries won
the (irand Champion Com-
mercial Pecan honors. Paul
Muhle received 1st place
honors with his Sioux entry
and it received the Reserve
Champion Commercial Pe-
can honors. Sorrells Pecans
also had a 1st place Wichita
entry in the Commercial Di-
vision.
The Classic Division is
made up of pecan varieties
that arc no longer propagated
by commercial orchards but
are still enjoyed by growers,
hobbyists and homeown-
ers. This year’s Classic Di-
vision consisted of entries
in the Apache, Cape Fear,
Gra-Tex, Mahan and Variety
Seedling classes. Sorrells
Pecans received 1st place
honors in the Cape Fear,
Mahan and Variety Seedling
classes. Paul Muhle received
2nd place with his Variety
Seedling. Womack Nursery
received 1st place honors
with their Apache entry and
Gra-Tex entry. The Apache
pecan entry from Womack
Nursery received Grand
Champion Classic Pecan
honors and Sorrells Pecans
Variety Seedling entry re-
ceived Reserve Champion
Classic honors.
The Native Pecan Di-
vision consists of pecans
grown on trees that are the
result of nature planting the
trees mostly in pecan bot-
toms. This year’s Native
Grand Champion Pecan
and Reserve Champion Pe-
can went to Sorrells Pecans.
Third place native went to
Katherine Bean.
All first place class win-
ners receiving a 1st place
blue award automatically ad-
vance to the Regional Pecan
Show held in Stephenville
on Friday, December 12th.
The first three placings from
each class at the Regional
Shows advance to the State
Pecan Show held each year
as a part of the Texas Pe-
can Growers Annual Meet-
ing. Congratulations to all
the winners in this year’s
Comanche County Pecan
Show.

Pioneer Award
The late Don Chester was
honored by his fellow farm-
ers and ranchers as the Texas
Farm Bureau’s District 7 Pi-
oneer Award winner during
the 75th annual meeting of
the state’s largest farm orga-
nization.
The award recognizes
those who have made signif-
icant contributions to Farm
Bureau and Texas agricul-
ture.
"Don Chester was a mem-
ber of the Comanche County
Farm Bureau for a remark-
able 57 years,” members
of his nominating commit-
tee wrote. "His tenure was
marked by significant contri-
butions to Farm Bureau and
to his community. With his
passing in 2002, Comanche
County Farm Bureau lost a

manche County Farm Bu-
reau in 1945 and began fill-
ing leadership roles soon
after becoming a member.
He was director from 1948-
52, chairman of the building
committee from 1972-75,
and sales agent for Texas
Farm Bureau Insurance from
1952-64.
He served on the Policy
Development Commit-
tee for 10 years and on the
Member Services Commit-
tee for 5 years. He was also
chairman of a special Peanut
Committee, during which
time he met in Chicago with
the American Farm Bureau
committee and the USDA.
In addition, he was chairman
of the Legislative and Field
Crop committees.
Chester also played a
major role in membership
drives in his early years with
the Comanche County Farm
Bureau.
He was a member of the
Chamber of Commerce for
10 years and was a Masonic
Lodge member since 1948.
