Study Made Concerning
Dairy Industry Changes
by Dan Martin,
Taxas Milk Markat
Administrator'! Oftlca, Dallas
In an effort to determine what
has happened to farm structure of
Texas dairy producers, Order 126
conducted a study among 16 coun-
ties. The top ten counties in terms
of milk production as of May 1985
were used. Data for these counties
were collected for May of each
year dating back to 1978. During
this 8 year period, 16 counties
have appeared in the top ten coun-
ty list, and each of these were in-
cluded in this study. One of the
counties to be included in this
study is Comanche.
Average daily deliveries were
determined for each producer in
the county. Size ranges were
determined and producers were
assigned to the appropriate range.
Table 1 shows the production of
total milk attributable To each size
range. Also shown is Comanche's
total milk production for May of
each year as well as number of
farms in production. In May of
1978, 48.77 percent of total milk
was produced by farms with
average daily deliveries of less
than 10,000 pounds of milk while
in May 1985 farms of the same size
were contributing 58.69 percent of
total milk. This indicates a
decreasing size of dairy farms in
Comanche County.
Figure 1 shows Comanche's
aggregate milk production
steadily increased from 9.512
million pounds in May 1978 to
13.290 million pounds in May
1985, an increase of 40 percent.
Although milk production has in-
creased Comanche still ranks fifth
in total production as has it in all
years except in May 1982 when it
reached fourth. Despite the in-
crease in overall production,
production per farm has fallen
slightly.
Figure 2 shows the average daily
delivery for all producers in
Comanche. Average daily
deliveries decreased from 6,819
pounds in May 1978 to 6,596
pounds in May 1985 a decrease of
3 percent. Number of farms
operating in Comanche increased
from 45 in May 1978 to 65 in May
1985 indicating that new
producers are entering into
dairying with smaller operations.
This situation is different from
that experienced in most other
major dairy counties. Dairy far-
mers in Comanche County reduced
production substantially in 1984
which has carried over into 1985
mainly by participating in the
Dairy Diversion Program.
