Alto students in grades three
through six, enjoyed a concert at
12:80 p.m. Tuesday, May 12 in the
Elementary Gym. The Westbrook
String Quartet, consisting of An-
drew Bruck, violin; Susan Bren-
neis, violin; Stephen Pelkey, Cello
and Cynthia Kempf, Viola, enter-
tained a very enthusiastic group of
young people and adults.
Starting the concert with “Deep
in the Heart of Texas,” was met
with singing and hand claps. After
this, Andrew Bruck gave an ex-
planation of each instrument and
the function of each. Sounds heard
on movies and cartoon were made
by the different instruments and
they received a good response from
the audience as to where that sound
is heard or what is signified, for
example, laughter or sliding down
something.
The Westbrook String Quartet
formed at the Yale School of Music
in 1983, while its members were
completing their Master of Music
degrees. During the 1984-85 season,
the Quartet toured southern New
England while serving as the Post-
Graduate String Quartet in
Residence at the University of
Massachusetts. In September of
1965, the Westbrook Quartet moved
to Nacogdoches, Texas to join the
faculty of Stephen F. Austin State
University and to become its first
Resident String Quartet. Their
duties at the University include
teaching strings and performing as
a quartet, both on campus and
throughout Texas.
In addition to University spon-
sored concerts, the Westbrook
String Quartet was awarded grant
money from the Piney Woods
Foundation to concertize in smaller
East Texas communities. In 1967,
the Quartet will appear as soloists
with the East Texas Symphony to
perform several works for string
quartet and orchestra, including
Elgar's Introduction and Allegro.

‘Just Home Folks ... ’
by Janet Gates
If visitors to Alto Elementary
School noticed the lack of
congestion on sidewalks last
Friday, it was because the second
and fifth grade classes were gone
on field trips.
Buses pulled out with sack lun-
ches, canned drinks, excited
children and possibly some ap-
prenhensive teachers. Can’t you
just imagine the enthusiasm...
The Alto High faculty and studen-
ts will greatly miss one of the
familiar faces in the school office
next school year. Mrs. Nita Smith
has stated that this is her last year
to work at AHS.
Out of town guests in the home of
Madeline and Alfred Danheim last
week were Jim and "Pete” Moody
of Pasadena, also, Kent and
Gradine Gulvin, formerly of
Pasadena, now retired and living in
Maydelle.
Glad to report that Rev. Austori
Kennedy is now out of the hospital
in Jacksonville and doing a whole
lot better. Talking to him on the
phone, he sounds a lot stronger than
he has been. We are grateful for
that!
If you want a delicious sno-cone,
drop by at the Ice Palace at the cor-
ner of Elm and Hwy 69, next door to
the Headstart building. You will
probably notice it because of the
line formed. Johnny and Debbie
Pate invite you by Monday through
Friday 1 to 5 p.m., 28 Flavors...
Rain was a welcomed visitor to
the Alto area again this week. You
can surely see smiles on the ran-
chers’ and cattlemen’s faces that
will need a good hay crop.
AHS SPRING RELAY regional
qualifiers are Kevin Pope,
Steve Loftin, Derrick Richar-
dson and Arthur Hackney.
They will be going to Austin,
May 16 for the State Track

The Chalk Board had the
following verse to greet every one:
Welcome to Super Seniors
We’re having the time of our life
We’re having the time of our life
Tho the years quickly fly
And the birthdays going by
We’re having the time of our
lives.
At 11 o’clock Hubert Davis called
the 80 people to order as Pinky
Moore led the opening song,
“Blessed Assurance, Jesus Is
Mine,” accompanied at the piano
by Bertie Lee Smith.
The opening prayer was given by
Guynell Kennedy.
Jo Morgan called attention to the
words on the Chalk Board and led
the group in singing, “Since Jesus
Came Into My Heart,” then she led
the group in singing the lines from
the Chalk Board to the same tune.
Hubert recognized the visitors
and guests. He called attention to
Marcell Johnson, a former Volun-
teer Christian Worker in building
Hilltop Church building who had
just returned from Texas City
where he was a volunteer worker in
building the Fellowship Baptist
Church that had been destroyed by
Hurricane Alicia in 1983. A picture
appeared on the front page of the
Texas City Sun entitled “Watching
a Miracle in Progress.”
Gene Willims read a poem en-
titled, “Heaven’s Grocery Store.”
Virginia Davis recognized the
birthday people for the month of
May. A. J. (Sonny) Vinson led the
Happy Birthday song.
She gave schedules to the people
going on the Super Seniors trip The
chartered bus will leave the chur-
ch’s parking lot at 6 p.m. on the 19th
for the four day trip.
Hubert asked the group to stand
as Mahlon Carter gave the prayer
of thanks The visitors were asked
to lead the two lines for the covered
dish dinner.
While in line to be served, Hubert
played a tape of Jerry Clower’s
talking, “A Comedian Speaker,”
which was taped at the Senior Adult
Convention in Dallas last week.
After the dinner Hubert thanked
the decorating committee and
asked the group to give them a hand
of applause
Then Sonny introduced the
program leaders, Mike and Rhonda
Thomas from Nacogdoches. Rhon-
da accompanied at the piano the
following program: “A Song Holy
Angels Cannot Sing;” Jokes:
Aggies Are All Going To Heaven,
and A Dream Aland A J.; Choruses,
“Praise the Name of Jesus, River
of Life,” He Paid a Debt”; Songs,
“Amazing Grace,” “How Can It
Be?” “Old Rugged Cross,” and
“Without Him.”
Hubert thanked the Thomases
and the group gave an applause for
the program.
Hubert stated that our program
people must be an exchange
program as Bro. Bill Morgan had
gone to Nacogdoches to be guest
speaker for a Senior Adult group,
which brough forth smiles and
laughter from the people.
The group stood and sang, “Since
Jesus Came Into My Heart,’’ and
Sonny dismissed with prayer
The visitors were Scott anu Jeff
Johnson of Lake Jackson, Anne
Earp from Lincoln, California,
Marcelle Johnson Pollok, and the
guests, Mike and Rhonda Thomas
of Nacogdoches
