by MITCH WORD
Sports Writer
The Levelland Loboettes
entered the finals of the West
Texas Girls Invitational Tourna-
ment going up against the host
team, the Slaton Tigcrettes, and
when they left the Slaton High
School Gymnasium they had taken
all the squad had to offer for a ,40-
35 win Friday evening.
With the win the Loboettes
stand at 17-1 on the season, win-
ning the championship of the
strong annual event, and head
coach Dean Wcesc showed his
respect for the opposition.
"Slaton is always a tough team.
It was a tough, physical game.
Both teams played hard, but really
neither team played well. We were
lucky to get ahead late and stay
ahead," Wcesc said after the game.
The Loboettes were prepared
for a dogfight from thcr Tigerctlcs,
and the host squad spared no
expense in providing the defending
state 4A champions with a pure
tussle throughout the contest. The
two teams fought back and forth
early, with the Loboettes taking a
13-6 lead after the first period of
play, much to the chagrin of the
huge Slaton following.
The Tigcrettes rode high on
emotion in the second period. After
a pair of baskets by Lcvclland’s
Rachel Hesse and Twylana Harri-
son made the lx>bocttc lead 17-6
with 6:05 left in the half, the Slaton
squad exploded for 10 unanswered
points, with six coming from all-
state performer Kim Robinson,
making the score 17-16 with 2:45
left before halftime. Neither team
could score for two minutes, and
Lcvclland’s Hesse finally broke the
drought with a basket with 40
seconds left, giving Levelland a
19-16 lead as die teams went to the
dressing room at the half.
The Loboettes and Tigcrettes
literally traded scores throughout
the third quarter. Seniors Jcrcc
Blakcmorc pnd Carol Bailey
provided the bulk of the offense for
the team, while Slaton’s Robinson
carried the hometown group with
nine points. The Loboettes took a
four point lead, 27-23 with 56
seconds on the clock in the stanza
on Bailey’s final basket of the
period, but Robinson hit two
consecutive shots in the final
seconds of the quarter to tie the
score at 27-all as the hometown
crowd exploded with enthusiastic
cheering. loose again underneath the basket.
The final period provided no this time drawing the fifth and final
letdown in intensity for the squads, foul from Robinson, who exited
Slaton look a 29-27 lead on a quick the game with 17 points. Bailey’s
jumper by Cammie While. Tw<Y basket was counted, and after
minutes later, Bailey scored on an adding the free throw, Levelland
inside shot to know the score at 29-
29. One moment later Bailey got
led 32-29 with 4:49 left in the
game.
Although Bailey soon drew her
filth foul and had to leave (he
game, the Loboettes still gained
control of the contest on a four-
point output from Harrison, putting
the game out of reach.
Bailey led the Loboettes in
scoring with 14 points, followed by
Hesse with eight and Blakcmorc,
Harrison, and Marsha Shepherd
with six apiece. Robinson led
Slaton with her game-high 17
points, followed by White with 10.
"I think we are okay physically
coming back from the holidays, but
we didn’t play well as a team
during the tournament. We had
individuals play well in each game,
but didn’t have a good game as a
team throughout the tournament
We’re not back to where we ought
to be mentally," Wcesc added.
The squad continues ns season
Tuesday evening as they host the
Borger Lady Bulldogs in a 6:30
p.m. District 1-4A encounlei ai
Gano TubbGym.
"1 haven’t seen Borger tins
year. I’ve got a film that I’ll watch
over the weekend, and we’ll try to
get ready for them,” the coach
added.

they shot the ball pretty well, also.
