The Sundown girls and boys
golf teams swept the competition
of the District 5-A Golf Tourna-
ment last week.
The event, which was shortened
to nine holes due to inclement
weather, saw the boys group card a
combined 182 to win first place.
They were followed by Anton with
196 and the Sundown B team with
a 211.
The girls competition displayed
the Sundown squad that captured
first with a 228 over the Lorenzo
Golf Course. They were followed
by Southland with a 245 and Anton
with a 260.
The boys team consisted of
Cory Bean and Billy Hernandez,
who shot a 44 over nine lioles to
lead the squad. Other members of
the team and their scores were
Ruben Nugent, 46; Brant Fryar,48;
and Johnny Mosley, 49.
The Sundown B team members
and their scores were Harold
Dominguez, 48; Anthony Mojica,
49; Frank Hernandez, 56; Marco
Marroquin, 58; and Mark Rucker,
58.
The victorious girls squad
consisted of Sandy Perez, who shot
a 48, along with Eva Schulmeyer,
58; Tara Childs, 58; Stephanie
Hedges, 64; and Kristi Howard, 51.
Bean won the individual medal-
ist honors in a playoff with Hernan-
dez, while Perez won the girls
medalist honors.
"1 think we played pretty well
under the conditions The kids got
out and had played a couple of
holes on the course, and the coach-
es decided that it was just too cold,
so we cut it down to nine holes, and
we were able to do pretty good,"
said sundown golf coach Dennis
Vcrkamp.
The teams advance to Regional
competition to be held April 25-26
at the Levelland Country Club and
Sundown Municipal Golf Course.
"The boys will have a pretty
good advantage, playing over here
on our course," said Vcrkamp.
"Still, there will be some good
competition from teams like
Booker, Wheeler, Paducah, Ran-
kin, and Iraan. The girls have never
played on the Levelland course,
and this is kind of a rebuilding year
for them, but we’re going to give it
our best shot."
Hodge scores ace
Rick Hodge carded a holc-in-
one April 7 at the Levelland Coun-
try Club.
Hodge scored the shot on die
par-three, 149-yard hole number
three. Hodge used a nine-iron on
die shot. Witnesses to the event
were James K. Walker, Larry
Roberts, and Larry Baggett.
