The Levelland Loboettes
opened another door to defending
their state 4A title as they defeated
Pflugerville 51 -40 in the Region I
championship last Saturday eve-
ning in Abilene.
The Loboettes, now 32-1, are
scheduled to face Paris in the state
semi-final at 8:30 p.m. Thursday
evening at the Frank Erwin Center
in Austin. The Lady Panthers
ended their season at 33-2 with the
setback.
The Loboettes enjoyed an 8-0
run shortly before the end of the
first half, and head coach Dean
Weese called that two-minute span
a key to the ball game.
"That run right at the end of the
first half was a big factor in our
winning," said Weese. "We went to
a 1-2-1-1, and that was the key to
the ballgame. We needed a spurt,
and got it right before (he half, and
that was because we went to the 1-
2-1-1."
The game pitted the number
one-ranked team in the state
(Levelland) versus the second-
ranked Lady Panthers, and the
contest turned out to be as exciting
as was anticipated.
Pflugerville struck the first blow
of the battle as forward Jennifer
King scored just seconds into the
ballgame. The Loboettes’ Twylana
Harrison controlled the tip, but
King swiped the ball away from
Levelland and broke away from the
pack for a layup and a lightning-
quick 2-0 lead.
King added a free throw 30
seconds later to stretch the lead to
3-0 with 7:25 left in the opening
period.
The Loboettes got their scoring
machine untracked as Marsha
Shepherd connected on a 17-foot
jumper with 6:35 remaining in the
first stanza to make the score 3-2.
20 seconds later King made her
awesome presence felt again as she
drove the lane for a layup to make
the Lady Panthers’ lead 5-2.
Shots from Harrison and Carol
Bailey sandwiched a score from
Pflugerville’s Aly Llorens to make
the score 7-6 Pflugerville, then
Bailey added another basket to
give Levelland their first lead of
the game, 8-7 on a feed from Jeree
Blakemore with 3:25 left in the
first eight-minute span.

Harrison’s second basket came
with 19 seconds left in the half as
the Loboettes went to the dressing
room with a commanding 26-18
margin before a large contingent of
Levelland fans who had journeyed
to the Mabee Complex on the
Hardin-Simmons University
campus.
In the opening moments of the
third quarter Pflugerville narrowed
the margin to 27-22 on a pair of
King free throws and a Llorens
basket. Levelland returned the
favor with a Bailey bucket and a
shot from Hesse, who had stolen
the ball to race downcourt and sink
a six-foot jumper, making the score

period.

play.
The Lady Panthers appeared
ready to make their move in the
final stanza, as Llorens added a
basket with 13 seconds gone in the
quarter to make the tally 37-32, but
Bailey added a basket and a pair of
free throws to stretch their margin
back to nine, 41-32 with 6:14 left
in the game.
