Lightfoot tells of old Comanche once again
By Fredda Jonne
For history buffs like me,
the name Billy Bob Lightfoot
became synonymous with Co-
manche Cpunty History many
years ago because back in
1949, a young man whom
many knew simply as Billy
Bob, completed a very exten-
sive thesis over the history of
this county while earning his
Masters Degree at the Univer-
sity of Texas. Mr. Lightfoot
went on to become Dr.
Lightfoot, working as an asso-
ciate professor of history at
Missouri State University from
1957 until he retired in 1988.
I’ve always given credit to
Dr. Lightfoot’s The History of
Comanche County to 1920 for
creating that first spark of in-
terest in me (the student who
hated history), an interest that
eventually became a passion to
leant more about where we in
this county actually “came
from.” I have also said many
times that I believe his thesis
should be required reading for
every student in the county.
Last week Rickey and I
were privileged to be able to
spend some days with Dr.
Lightfoot and his lovely wife
Ruth, and you can imagine my
excitement when I was al-
lowed to prowl through files of
information about times long

gone. Although it has been over
fifty years since the young Billy
Bob did his research and writ-
ing on this county, it is still crys-
tal clear in the memory of Dr.
Lightfoot, and he graciously
spent hours discussing it, all too
willing to share his information.
History of Comanche County notes, pictures, and, believe it
to 1920 certainly stands wit- or not, even interviews which
ness to this. he conducted with the children
and grandchildren of the origi-
nal settlers of this county!
Visiting with the Lightfoot’s,
I was once again struck by the
realization that what we do in
this life so often lives on to
touch others long after we’ve
moved off of the scene. The
