In times of financial stringency
when dollars like bits at noon-
day seek dark holes 3ml elude the
grasp of needy men each commer-
cial center should by concert of ac-
tion strive to preserve to itself for
use in a local way all the money
which it can command. At this
season of the year merchant'' and '
traders of Waco uuU3lly remit to j
the east largo sams of money for;
they are now buying fall stocks and
settling balances duo on former pur-1
chases. Miny of these merchants
could by the asking get an exten-
eion of thirty or bixty days without
the least injury to their credit and
by this method alone much money
oould be retained in local circula-1
t'on to be used in settling local
balances and thus the stringency
would be scarcely felt in our homo !
business. If those who aro
daily calling on our local
banks for heavy eastern exchange
would make an effort in this direc-
tion in a short timn tho accum ihi
tions of tradd would givo to ths
c'ty a greatly enlarged volume of
money; and the cotton crop coming
iu within tho time indicated and
being placed on the market bought
by tho eastern mills would place
I the balance oh trade in our favor

balloons were sent up near the close

mile; and thi- -a followed in
Marjh of the preseut year by the
launching of a gold-beater's skin
balloon of 1 1' cubic yards capacity
filled with coal gas. Apparatus was
carried for registering tempera .ure
and pressure. The last balloon
reached a height of 10 1 i' miles
aud at 1 miles win recoided a
temperature of on degree beloA-
zero Fahrenheit which was 120 de-
grees lower than at the earth's cur-
lace. The investigation thus begun

Tho aoutimonts expressed by the
little band of fanatics which mot in
this city on tho 25th claiming to
represent the Farmers' Alliance of
this district wore entirely too radi-
cal in their utterances and failed to
voico tho sentiment of that very
conservative organization. Miny
of our best citizens brou 1-minded
conservative and patriotic aie mem-
bers of tho Alliance and as such
thoy must view with pain and dis-
pleasure the propogation of doo-
trino in thoir name which if heeded
by those who had the power would
stop the business of this country as
completely as would a total failure
of crops. The logic of their pofi-
tion is "we have a theorj" and if
we li3d tho power we would wreck
tho country in our effort to prove
the correctness of "our theory." It
is confilently asserted not five per
cent of tho members of the Alii
ance will endorse the manifesto of
that little eathprinc

Tho probability is tint should
England go to war with France
about the Sitim affair Russia will
also take a hand for Franco and
that it would involve Europe in a

increasing her carrying trade.
Tho failure of tho hay crop in
