Tills year our Columbian year has
given fresh impetus if any were need-
ed to tan or russet leather for foot-
wear. It was a l.ap;n thought which
brought this serviceable color into use
and it needed no 'ja d'etre better
than its great practicability and per-
fect adaptabilin for both country and
town. It was introduced however
like many another most excellent and
sensible thiny has been as a fad and
oue uiai u was almost epeeteil wouiu
pass away with the heat and dust of a
summer or two Hut it seems destined
to a place all the ear round as a com-
fortable walking1 boot suitable for sea-
side and mountain wear and none tho
less appropriate for young ladies who
enjoy a brisk walk through tho park
and over the country roads when tho
brown leaves rustle and the air is keen
J with frost.
Just now I am told every girl who
orders a pair of "IJluehers" wants
I them made a little easy so that they
shall be perfectly comfortable for tho
I Chicago fair for who goes to the fair
must do a good deal of walking and
(.landing under any circumstances.
Prom observation it is foretold that a
' Chicago crowd will be a russet-footed
which adds both to its appear.
Biii'o and its comfort. The glaco
kid in all colors is finding much
favor for evening wear and the gray
glace for afternoon and carriage wear
is the last thought for the summer Eca-
son. As for low shoes and ties it goes
alinsst without saying that the russet
are the things for general summer
wear and they may no longer be con-
sidered as an after thought or mere ac-
cessories to one's .stock of shoes. They
belong to the important necessities
both foi stL. nnd comfort and to
mark the fact that they have come to
stay one can now buy blown rubbers
to match one's brown shoes or boots.

erowd unci the few who are Improvi-
dent enough to forget the task of
keeping black leather in any appear-
ance of neatness will learn a thing or
two.
While in the making of russet boots
every point of nicety is considered that
obtains in dress boots there is ono
point of difference that must not bo
overlooked your russet boots must
lace iin the front ami mm- tint lmlinn
at the side as do your patent leathers
or your I rencli calf walking boots.
Russia leather is the correct article
and it is so soft and pliable taking the
finish and keeping it so well even im-
proving in color as it is worn that it
takes immediate precedence-over other
leathers for russet boots and shoes.
The "Uluclier" is a recent and com-
fortable cut fur a boot and calls for
rather a low heel with sole adapted to
the needs of a pedestrian of more or
less ambition A little more dressy
perhaps i; the regular walking boot
cut with a .straight foxing. With neat
tips and I'iecatlilly toes they are about
as natty as anything in shoe leather
could be.
Here is a tip. by the way on shoe
tips. Women are just the least bit
weary of choosing between a pointed
tip and straight tip on their boots and
hoes and the next thing we know
there will be no tips at nil. We shall
probably see evidence of this as tho
summer grow s old.
White shoes for country and seaside
are more in favor than ever tills son.
son and with the pretty thin stuffs
composing many of the summer gowns
they certainly are a dainty innovation
bringing with them a necessity for
Bnowy white hosiery. White canvas
such a favorite material for these shoes
last year is still much in use and
makes a ven neat and pretty shoe;
white suedi is the newest thing and is
pointea on in white patent leather
the white suede itself or the favorite
tan. Ked morueco for house and piazza
wear has lt none of its former
prestige and in its des'.ined places
will be more worn than ever with
white dresses
A very pretty slipper quite the new-
est cut I have is called the "Czarina."
It Is made in Russia leather and a
gray glace kid for summer use and is
specially pretty for carriage dress. It
has a double strap over the instep
mocks are packed while it is equally
impossible to carry them. Hut tho
lovers' tiff anybody can enjoy because
it goes everywhere merely tucked un- '
der the strap of a satchel. In fact I
only the bare canvas is carried. When '
the camp ground is reached four polei '
nre quickly cut and set up and three!
short pieces bound to them Indian
stvlo by heavy cords. Then the middlo
of the canvas is secured to the top
cross bar and either end to the bottom
pieces. The poles should be a trlflo
heavier than bean poles and eight feet
long; the crosssticks four feet. I 'lunged
into the sod an inch the legs of this
chair never spread. 1 1 may be used on
the veranda with comfort if a light
straddle be made to connect the two
lower cross bars. American
