Tlio Theme of Discussion in Waco.
Interested Parlies.
The shooting scrape on the
Zpotal rivur hmiooda mention of
whioh was made in Tiik Njcws of
yesterday has furnished the theme
of conversation for almost every
gathering of three or four that has
convened in Waco since the publi-
cation of the news. Perry McKay
is well known heie having been for
awhile clerk at the Royal hotel.
W. F. Lswis the man who was
shot was formerly a cattle nnn in
Tom Green cjunly. He moved to
Waco and joii td a syndicate of
Waco gentlemen who o vu immensi'
interests in the four Mexican states
of Vera Cruz Coliina Jalisco and
Michoacan. This -syndicato is com-
posed of M'-s-r-. K T. Gitrley W.
F. Lewis DM3 H Gurloy II. M.
Taylor and Dr. II. W. Bron. G.
B. Gurley is their eugiueor and
Thcs. Gilgiin of the City of Msxieo
is their lawyer. W. l Lewis is a
refined cowboy whose schooling
did not take away the fighting pro-
clivi'ies of that class.
The Waco syndicate acqiirccl
from the owners 12000 acres of
laud on the Zipotal river whioh is
a confluent of the Tuxp3n river.
This hacienda is inteeu or twenty
milo-3 above Tuxpan. John A. Mj-
Kay acquired a claim to the same
land from Kookport parties and
for a while ho worked in harmony
with the Waco syndicate but ho fell
out and no end of trouble succeed-
ed. His sou Perry MtKiy was
there and the elder McKay
"ucceeded in gottiug John Drayton
UnUed Stato-Tcjnsul at Tuxpan in-
terested in his behalf so that when
a Mexican court issued a process of
ojec m mt against the McKay party
the consul hrJiited the S.ars and
Stripes over the hacienda aud un-
der the oircumsUnoeH the Mexican
auchonties declinutl to interfere.
Later Lewis tjeoted the Mi Kay
parly and Perry MilOy shot mm
as descrihed.
The interference of John Dray-
ton consul was repotted to Minis
ter Gray who in turn sent a report
of the affair to Hon. Walter Q
Gresharn the fpcretary of state t
Washington and the latter has
directed further inquiry which is in
program. Tho enuro affair aud the
incident of the shooting will bo
reported to congress.
Col. E. J. Gurley left Monday
for Jdlapa where ho will meet
Thos. Gilg3n tho attorney of thb
syndicate and these gentlemen will
lake stops to protect the interest
of the Waco Bjndicato. Col. Gar-
ley is also the president of tho Mcx
ican Coffet company which is com-
poHod of E. J. Gurley president;
J. T. Lyttle vico president; W. S.
Martin tuporiutendonl: D. K.
Guiky treasurer; G. B. Gur-
loy chief engineer and Dr.
Robert C. Brown secretary. The
Mexican Coffee company whioh is
chartered in Albuquerque New
Mexico but has itB home in Waco
ovit3 the haciendaiof Ahuejullo and
de la Hucrta situated in the states
of Coliini Jalisco and Michoacan
Mexico. The lepoits of the survey
made by Chief Engineer George 15
Gurley of these hacienda foim
highly interesting Ltyrature
aud will oventually become part of
the accepted history of thai U'rra
incegnita. Theao eurveyors ox-
toudod their investigations into tho
fctato of Ver3 Cruz and it was duo
to their accounts that the purchase
was made of the Zipotal river lauds
about which tho coutoutiou oc
