ORIGIN OF THE COTTON MIL-
LER. A Farmer -who foels Warran-
todin Crying "'Eureka."
Winchester Fa) ette county. June 22.
A well to do farmer living in this county
some few vv eeks ago while plowing on his
farm s'opped to rest his team and picked
up an old stall of cotton cutting ltoifsome
twelve or fourteen inches long and began
to split it open. Seeing it was full of dust
"he was led to investigation of the cause of
the dust. He carefully opened it and
founds number of small white worms.
He closed up thestalk in its original con-
dition wrapped it close with a string car-
ried it home laid it aw ay and in a w eek or
two thinUng of the circumstance again he
went and opened it and found that one of
the worms had developed itself into a veri-
table cotton miller e idently the insect that
laid the erg frorn which the worm is pro-
duced. Now if 'any doubt they will only
hat e to examine old cotton stalks to be ful-
ly convinced that they Ire literally full of
small worms early in the spring and it i
thebpinion of the writer that the cotton
worm does not breed in any other plant
for the reason that they don't feed upon
any other. Now if my views are correct
which I am satisfied will soon be demon-
strated it is easy to see at once how the
farmers may rid themseh es of this dreaded
plague. The plan is for all cotton grow crs
to gather early in the spring all their old
cotlomstalksandbum them. If this be
universal we will accomplish tlie desired
object. Galveston News.
