ith Plains Boys Invited to Participate
In Lubbock District Boxing Tournament
Amateur Boxers living outside
of Lubbock are challenged, and in-
vited, to defend a record they es-
tablished last year in not allowing
a single Lubbock fighter to capture
one of the eight District Golden
Gloves championships.
The District tournament is sched-
uled February 5 and 6, and possibly
the 7th, depending upon the number
of entries, and all amateur fighters
16 years of age and older are cor-
dially invited to compete, The tourn-
ament will be staged at the Mer-
chants Building on the Panhandle-
South Plains Fair Grounds, which
has been transformed into an arena
capable of seating 1,500 spectators.
The eight champions last year, and
many of the best fighters were from
neighboring towns. Heavyweignt
champion was Rhea “Fats” Mitchell
of Lockney; light heavyweight cham-
pion was Herman Dirickson of Lit-
tlefield; the middleweight winner
was Kermit Wooldridge of Aber-
nathy; welter-weight champion,
-James Stotts, of Slaton; lightweight
winner, Pet Nachlinger of Hermleigh;
featherweight, Tommy Coats of Sea-
graves; bantamweight, Harry Bell of
Slaton and, flyweight, Curtis Lebow
of Abernathy.
Other prominent out of town fight-
ers who were pleasing in the District
tournament last year were: Wayne
Binkley, Whitharral; Jake Hancock,
Slaton; James Burris, Floydada;
Junior McLaurin, O'Donnell; E. J.
Slaton; L. B. Martin, 1938 champion.
Smith, Littlefield; Earl Blassingame,
Floydada; Howell Steen, Brownfield;
Guy Manges, Plain view; John D.
Hazle, Abernathy; Dub Wrinkle, Lit-
tlefield; “Red" Robinson, Amherst;
V. N. Townsen. Hale Center: E. 1.
Wilson, Amherst; Horace Woods, Lit-
tlefield; Dick Bell, Slaton; W. D. Mc-
Carty, Littlefield; Ray White. Sudan;
W. H. Bradley, Littlefield; Alvin Mc-
Carty, Littlefield; Melton WyaU, Ab-

[ Annual Bible Lectureship will start
I February 18 and continue through
Thursday of that week, announces
President James F. Cox.
“The KingdorfT'bf Heaven” will be
the general subject for this gather-
ing w'hich yearly attracts people to
Abilene from more than a dozen
states. Two lectures will be deliver-
ed daily by prominent ministers of
the church of Christ.
Two panel discussions are also
scheduled daily for Tuesday, Wed-
nesday and Thursday. "Christian
j Unity” will be the subject for the
first two days and 'The Eldership"
wdll be the topic under considera-
tion in the two sessions on the final
day.

each winner will receive a 16-inch

state tournament. Runners-up in
each of the eight weight divisions
will receive gold-filled medals, suit-
ably engraved.
