Isr-BEronE the opening oi railroads
in Mexico tho prico of Amorican
rotton was from 13 to 15 cents por
pound. In consequents of this
cotton growing was very profitable
in Mexico. The Mexicans now
complain that tho railway charges
on American cotton aro so low as
to discriminate against tho Mexi-
can cotton growor.
An 1 Paso dispatch says a gang
of Apache Indians aro again on tho
war path. Thoy raided tho Cor-
rolilas ranch in Chihuahua and
drovaway twonty mules; tho In
dians wero pursued to within nine-
ty miles ot El Paso and aro sup-
posed to have mado their cscapo
into Now Mexico whore thoy will
likely bo heard from again.
A joke is not always a joko.
John Bobbins a barber of Lafay
ette Ind. went into a bar-room
that ho frequented and finding the
barkeeper asloop as ho snpposcd
thought ho wonld hido tho cosh
drawer. Tho barkeeper won awake
had him arrested and npon trial he
was sont up for fi vo years. This is
a serious joko on Bobbins who did
not intond to steal tho money.
It seems that horse stealing is
not an exclusively southern or
western enterprise Now Hamp-
shire has a liorso thiof named Car
ter who on ono occasion mado a
western borscdoalcr drnnk and
stolo a wbolo car load of horses
frnm him. Carter shinned Iho 1
horses to Boston and sold thom fori
6000; bo then went to Europe and
had a fine time for a conplo ot
years.
The Knights of Labor conven-
tion1 now in session at Richmond is
very largely attended. Governor
Loo of Virginia dolivorod an ad-
dress of wolcomo which was re-
sponded to in appropriate terms
by Grand Mastor Workman Pow-
dorly. Tho first and most impor-
tant work to bo accomplished by
tho convention will bo a revision
of tho constitution. Thoro is seem-
ingly a strong fooling against
strikes and boycotts.
Henry D. Johnson of Houston
is tho Bcpublican nominee for con-
gress for tho First congressional
district. The Houston Ago is a
personal friend of Mr. Johnson
saying ho is a clever follow gen-
ial warm-hearted liberal and so-
cial and it would not allow his
enemy to say a word against him.
iBut as tho candidato of the Bo-
publican party for congress it is
tho bounden duty of tho Ago to op-
poso him.
The Salvation army at Wilkcs-
barro Pa. havo been parading tho
streets and raising a disturbance
for somo timo. On Sunday night
four of the ringleaderswero arrest-
ed and locked up charged with
disorderly conduct. When taken
before- tho mayor thoy droppod
npon their knees and prayed but
in this caso prayer liad no officacy
and they woro fined S3 each and in
default wero sent to the' county
jail.
Pbesidist Cleveland is deter-
mined that offensive partisans
must go. Ho is determined to
bavo his order respected and fed
eral office-holders Democrats
though they may be will be dis
missed for taking part in orjnanip.
ulating Democratic political con-
vcntions. It is said tbat tho as'
Bistant postmaster at New Orleans
traveled thrco hundred miles to
take a band in tho ronomination
of Congressman King.
TnB second annual report of tho
bureau of labor is in courso of pre-
paration and will bo much moro
compvphensivo than tho report be-
loro congress last winter. A
thorough examination has boon
mado of tho relations of convict
labor to freo labor and overy peni-
tentiary jail and workhouse in tbo
United States where inmates aro
employed in industrial pursuits
has been visited by agents of tho
bureau. Tho reports will be csro-
fully tabulated. Of courso wo havo
jio moans of knowing what tho re-
port will bo but think it will bo
fotuid that tbo labor agitators havo
been quietly of exaggerating
tbo competition of prison labor
with honest labor.
The Houston Age of Saturday
.last gives an oxtonded history of
Befnuam Banner which was estab-
lished in tho spring of 1866 by
Mojcr McGary now known us
"Uncle Dan'l" of tho Age coming
down to tho present management
of tho Banner which commenced
in 1876 tho Ago says:
Mr. Bankia conducted tho Ban-
ner alono for several years and
then associated with himself nis
present partner Mr. John Lovin
and begun a daily edition in con-
nection with tho weekly j and they
havo mado it so interesting that it
is copied lrom and quoted all over
Texas and in other Statos and has
been an activo and valuable adver-
tising agency for the city of Bron-
ham and tbo county of Washington.
Jn thatrespect it could hardly bavo
fceon moro useful if it had been
twice its present size. .
We would dislike very much to
-seo its daily edition discontinued
but its publishers have tested tho
matter thoroughly And aro very
competent to determine whptjicr
ihcro can bo patronaao enough to
justify them in continuing it as a
aily.
COUNTY REPUBLICANISM.
Tho .Republicans in this county
aro making a strcnous effort to nso
tho party whip npon somo ol thoir
members who aro not as woll post-
ed on political affairs as they
shonld bo. Tho Banner knows
that tho .Republican party is both
largo and respectable more than
that it is the dominant party m
many states in tho union and that
until tho 4th of March lgS5 it was
in full possession of tho national
government. This is a froo coun-
try in matters of religion and poli-
tics and a man has as much right
to align himself with tho Bcpubli-
can party as ho has to align him
self with tho Democratic party. It
is a question of privilogo which no
ono has tho slightest right to (lis
pnto. No man has a right to ob
ject to anotbors honest convictions
in political matters. In Texas tho
Republican party is in a hopeless
minority and tho party is kept up
solely with a hopo that lightning
may striko and Bopublican presi-
dent bo elected in 1SS8 in which
ovont the Bopnblican leaders hopo
to fill tho federal offices in tho
stato. J'urt'.ier than this tho Bc-
publicans can accomplish nothing
in Toxas. Tho candidates for
county ofjeos on tho so-called Bo-
publican ticket aro using thoir best
oxortioris to mako it appear that
the cor.nty election is a strictly
partisan ono. Tho Bcpublican
conntv tickot is composed of
chromic office scokcrs who havo no
spco'ial claims upon tho peoplo and
whc cannot show any reason why
tUo candidates on tho I'coplo's
tickot should not bo elected. The
conscrvativo peoplo of this county
"without regard to party havo en
dorsed tho present administration
by asking tho county officers to
again becomo candidates for tho
timo
bcinjt thoy havo laid asido
all political preferences and pro'
poso to olect county olliccrs bo-
causo of their merits as such and
not becauso they aro Democrats or
Bcpublicans whereas tho Bcpubli-
can or opposition candidates havo
no claims upon tho peoplo further
than that their party should voto
for thorn upon purely party
grounds. There is no politics in
tho administration of county af
fairs; tho law boing administered
fairly and impartially fornll alike.
Tho prcsont county officers havo
been tried and havo not been found
wanting. Tho finances of tho
county havo not been in a hotter
condition for moro than a quarter
of a century whilo during tho on-
tiro Bcpublican administration of
county affairs covoring'ncarly fif-
toen yoars tho county was always
in debt for current oxpenscs and
county scrip was at a discount and
tho officers woro accused of specu-
lating in it at tho oxpenso of tho
taxpayers.
The Ausiin Statesman of Tues
day makes a strong appeal to tho
Democrats" to stick to tho straight
ticket and voto 'for tho nominees.
In regard to tho Stato tickot this
is snro to bo done but in county
affairs politics have to a great ex
tent lost their officacy. In strong
Democratic counties in this stato
party ndminalions havo been al
lowed to lapse oxcept perhaps in
tho large cities whero tho popula
tion is mixed. In cases where thoro
aro no political nominations tho
voters usually elect good mon for
officers. Party politics is all right
and proper where party issues aro
involved but in county and muni
cipal affairs tho very best men aro
needed; their individual politics
having nothing to do with their
ability to honestly and impartially
dischargo their duty as officers.
Toe St. Louis Globe-Democrat
a Bopublican paper that has said
more hard things about Texas and
Tcxans than any other nowspapcr
printed in tho United States is now
getting a great deal of froo adver
tising from tbo Toxas press. Somo
days ago it devoted two pages to
short biographical sketches of the
wealthiest men in over forty of the
largor towns of Texas. Brenham
cam o in for her share of the write
up; tho list was by no means com
plote.
Gen. W. T. Sherman oxprcsscs
tho utmost contempt for Jefferson
Pavis and Mr. Davis expresses the
utmost contempt for Gen. Sherman.
In tho matter of contempt honors
aro easy. Whilo tho animosities
growing out of tho war may bo said
to bo over the fooling of tho peo
ple toward tho two gonllcmcn
named is influenced to a great ex
tent bv the section of country in
which they wero raised
A State convention of tho Farm-
ers allianco opposed to their or-
ganization taking any part in poli-
tics is now in session at Dallas.
Tho representation is from a!! sec-
tions of the stale. One thing may
bo regarded as a corlainly it the
alliance as an organization dab
bles with politics Its days arc num
bered.
The Austin Call calls tho Demo
erotic county convention of Travis
county an "alleged" Democratic
convention and it intimates that
every man of them will bo defeated
by tho Independent candidates.
At this distance wo aro not pre-
pared to express any opinion in re-
gard to Travis county local poli-
tics. Col. JilioouE mauo rattling a
good Democratic speech at Car
thago tho other day. Ho showed
conclusively that the Democratic
party is the party of tbo people
and that through it justice would
bo 4onp to all without any distinc
tion.
ABOUT MONOPOLIES.
In times past a largo majority of
tho peoplo wero satisCod with
their condition ; now everybody
secms to bo dissatisfied. Every-
body lives to mako money and
comparatively fow mako much ai
they want. Men's wants aro to a
great oxtent regulated by their in-
come but in far too many inslan.
ccs men outlive or moro properly
spoaking spend moro monoy than
thoy mako and in such cases they
aro living at somcono else's ox-
penso. This is a fruitful soiirco
of dissatisfaction. The farmer com-
plains that his produce is not
bringing him what it is worth and
tho laborer and mechanic com-
plains that ho can not earn enough
wages to satisfy his wants. The
old adage: "Cut your garment ac
cording to your cloth " scorns to
havo been forgotten and peoplo
want to cut garmonts according to
their wants instead ol according
to tho quantity of cloth they havo
in hand. This very general de
position begets tho univon-al crj-
of monopoly though comparative
ly fow peoplo can give any accu
rate definition of tho word. It has
been but a low years since limes
woro what is called flush produce
of all kinds was high wages wero
high and every man of any thrift
had plonty of monoy; in fact
monoy was cheap and every ono
spont it iroely. Now times arc ex-
actly thercvorso ; monoy is searco
and all commodities are cheap.
Peoplo aro willing to buy but thoy
havo not got tho money to do so
Tho real causo of all tho troublo is
tho crodit system; this may bo best
illustrated in this way: five years
ago a balo of cotton would havo
paid a dobt of $60 now it takes a
oalo and a bulf to do tho same
thing and tho labor of producing
cotton has not boon proportionate
ly reduced. Tho man who is out
of dobt docs not suffer by tho ilc-
croaso in pricos becauso "his balo
of cotton will buy as much of any
commodity as it did when prices
wero high. Again it is charged
that railway tariffs aro too high
when tho truth is they aro as cheap
now or cheaper than they over
boforo ; yet in tho faco of this
indisputable fact demagogues
mount tho stump and toll tho peo-
plo that railroads aro giant mono
polies and aro absolutely sucking
tho life blood out of them. Kcro-
sino oil is now an articlo of abso
lute necessity and it is sold at ro-
tail atabout 25 cents a gallon whon
in former times it was worth 75
cents and tho pooplo say that tho
oil companios aro giant monopo
lies. There are monopolies no
doubt but by far tho groator part
of them exist solely in imagina-
tion tho domagoguo and agitator
havo lead pooplo to bcliovo that
almost ovcrything is a monopoly.
Closo attention to business and
economy in oxponscs would to a
great oxtent rcliovo tho peoplo of
tho incubus called monopoly.
Mon who are in prosperous circum-
ance3 and who havo money to
pay their way seldom complain of
monopolies. A very largo num-
ber of men would havo somo kind
of a monopoly had thov the power
to do so.
Tue Knights of Labor now hold-
ing a convention at Richmond Va.
aro in a very fair way to havo
troublo over tho raco question.
Grand Master Workman Powdcrly
mado a declaration in an address
that thcro was a perfect equality
of races. Tho negroes aro quick
to recognizo anything of tho kind
and colorod Knights will tako ad-
vantage of it in case a banquet or
or ball is given. In other secret
sociotios such as tbo Masons Odd
Fellows Knights of Pythias etc.
tho colored men have soparato lod-
ges and separato grand lodges with
out any connection with the whito
societies. Tho Knights of Labor
havo a nico and complicated ques-
tion on thoir bands.
-TrjE Rising Sun (Ind.) Recorder
a strong Bcpublican paper says
tho oleomargcrino law and tho
proposed anti-glucose law aro tho
worst "sumptuary legislation''
ever adopted or proposed to ho
adopted in this country and con
sistency wonld causo the Demo-
cratic party to tako a solid stand
against them. Tho Democratic
party as a general thing is right
but it is not always consistent

LAWS TO I'ROTECT THE POOR MAN
Tho demagogue tolls you that
tho laws of Texas have all been
made in favor of the rich and
against tho laborer. The statuto
ol our constitution says that the
domagoguo tells a base and wolul
falsehood. Let us test the matter
and sec.
First. Our constitution says no
man shall be imprisoned for debt.
Second. Uur constitution says
the homestead of a family shall not
bo sold by forced sale or execution.
Our State laws set aside the bomo-
stcad ; all household and kitchen
furniture two horse n wagon
buggy or carriage to the family
provisions for twclvo months all
farming implements and they can't
he touched tor debt ; also five milk
cows and calves and hogs and
sheep. Tho mechanics tools aro

tics owe for tho clothes that they
havo worn and tho victuals that
thov have eaten still thoy can hold
their property and the merchant

SOME TALLACIES IN KEOARD TO DIET
1. Thai thcro is any nutriment

2. That gelatine is nutritious
It will not keep a cat alive. Beel-

3. That an egg is eciual to a

cases. It is. as a rule contra-indicated
being usually indigestible;
but it is concentrated nutriment
