DOCTORS MMBLE
illcctinir of the Central Texas
Medical Associji
PROCEGDIXfiS OF THE SESSION
Papers on Medical Topics Head by Members
and Discussed by the llody.
The thirtieth quarterly session of
tho Central Texas Madioal Assooia-
lion was tho occasion of the arrival
in Waco of a goodly number of
physicians from the territory em-
braced by the asdocia'jou. They
arrived yesterday last night and to-
day and were taken in charge by
tho local puysioians who undertook
to make it pltaaant for them.
The hour set for meeting was 10
o'clock this morning and the city
council chamber the place.
Thitherwards tho local and visit
ing members began to repair as tho
lime stated drew near so that when
10 o'clock arrived there wa9 a very
comfortable assembly Boated about
a comfortable fire in tho mooting
room and a cotmortable smoke
introduction of those not acquainted
and a generally and agrooably social
time was enj iyod.
It was 10.30 when Dr. W. II.
Wilkes president mounted the
rostium and called the meoting to
oider. A roll call developad the pres-
ence of the following members:
W. II. Wilkes Taylor H ack
BurgesH Miiinook Bev Cildvell
Keiiy Graves Curtis Olive Park
Iluutur Ilalbert Hill King Fos
cue Scars Cole Shellon Waco;
M. J. Fra.ierM irgau; J C. Shaw
Stranger; J. II. Witt Eldy; A. E.
Spohn Corpus Christi; Daniel
P..rker Calvert; T.N Clark Rea
gtm; J. T. Valliant Brucevillo; J.
II. Trippes Bitlle; J. 11. Stew-
art West; Shufor Tyl.r; J. D
Lovelace South Bosq 10.
New members elected were Dr.
C. L. llorton of Waco and Dr. J.
A. Pipkin of Eist Wauo.
The lirat paper read was by Dr.
Paikor of Calvert.
"Hydrotherapy Its application
in medical and surgical piaotice."
This paper was an able argument
for tho medicinal virtues of pure
water which Dr. Parker considered
very effective in many diseases.
At the conclusion of tho paper
the subjeot was further discussed
by Drs. Sears Olive HalbertWitt
of E Idy and Dr. Parker himself.
An interesting feature of this discus-
sion was the description of a num-
ber of cates by which chills had
baen oured permanently by the
Builerer's getting wet either in the
rain or by falling in tho water. In
these instances and a whole lot of
them were cited it was thought the
euro W38 brought about by the shook
to the neivous system.'
Dr. Parker said he know of one
oao of chills being oured by the
sufferer's being chased by a dog.
lie did not however regard "a
cross dog as a reliable oure for
chills.
"Bicycling The evil effects on
pulmonary oordiao and polvio
structures" was tho subject of a
short but interesting paper read by
Dr. H. C. Black of Waco. Dr.
Black thought the use of the
bicycle especially the excessive us
was very injurious. As far as exer-
cise was concerned he thought only
the leg-! were developed that the
other parts of the body were held
a-i in a vise and that too in a very
impropor stooping posture.
Dr. Cr raves discussed the matter
and thought there were many cases
in which both men and women
could bo benefited by the use of the
bicycle though there were also
many cases in which it would be
very injurious.
Dr. Sjaij had heard of no in.
jurious effects arising from the use
of tho wheel.
Dr. Snohn gaid he regretted that
ho was too old and too largo to ride
a wheel. lie thought it as a rule
tine exoioiseand that it could safely
ba recommended to those who need
outdoor exercise without regard to
tho particular complaint.
Dr. Park thought thare oould be
no objection urged to the bioyole
that could not be urged agiinst any
other exercise which is carried to
excess.
Dr. Black closed the disou' s'on.
He slid he thought bicycle riding
injurious only when carried to ex
cess in ordiuary cases. In pelvic
and oordiao troubles ho thought it
could not possibly be otherwise than
harmful.
Dr. J. M. Frazior of Morgan
read an exceedingly interesting
paper on "Tho Autopsy Its ne-
cessity in pathological study." Ho
took the ground that autopsy was
the only absolutely certain way to
pursue pathological researches. He
said he had been carefully denying
the origination of typhoid fover in
his locality until recently he had
an opportunity to make two autop-
Hiea and he was now ready to re-
tract these denials. He had with
him some of the oigaus secured in
the autopsies mentioned and ex-
plained the cases from which they
wore taken lie thought the more
autopsies held the better the physi.
oians oould attend to future ivaes.
He recogn'.d the fact that there
was trouble to be encountered in
obtaining the consent of friends to
these au'opsies and that the laity
would have to be educated to it.
At the conclusion of Dr. Fiv
.ier's paper a vote of thanks was
given him and tho discussion of his
paper postponed till afternoon.
A1j jurnmeut was taken until 2
o'clock.
AI'TBUNOOX HKSSION.
I'pon reassembling this afternoon
the association lookup Dr. Fra.ier's
paper for discussion aud very inter-
esting talks were made by various
members all agreeing that the
autopsy was neeoi3S3ry to the better
study of pathological phenomena
A great dual of interest in the
specimens furnished by Dr. Fraz or
was nunifesied by members and
Dr. Spohn also furnished a nu 111 bar
that were examined wth more tbau
passing interest.
As The Nkyvs goes to press the
association is engaged in carrying
out the programme ai printed in
these columns Home days ago. Some
time during the afternoon the mom-
bors will go in a bony to the Waco
natatorium to which they have
been invited by Col. Pope. Tonight
at the Rjyal hotel a banquet will
be spread of which local and visit-
ing physicians and many other
guests will partake. Viands
and substantial will ba eaten ll'iids
will be absorbed and toasts will be
responded to by varions speakers.
