London high society has been exasper-

the St. .lames Gazetto detailing the ex-

clusive circles. Elizabeth L Banks who

From New Zealand conies an amusing
and suggestive story of an occtiuencit
which took placo sinco tho recent elec-
tion when women enjoyed tho right
of franchise. It seems that some of thr
ladies seated in tho stalls of a thea-
ter were wearing hat which interfeied
with tho view of those behind them a
circuinstanco not altogether unknown in
this country. Suddenh a male voice
from the pit exclaimed in a tone of pa-
thetic remonstrance "La.lie-.. now y.ui
have got tho franchise ou might really
take your hats off." Whether the sug'
gestion pioduce.l any oilier result than
the inevitable roar of laughter is not ic
lated but it is safe to coiieludi'lhat there
were women in the theater that did not
realizo that to be permitted to vote make
life's roses entirely tlioruleus. Ex-

CHICAGO'S GIRLS' CLUBS. "
niallitrlliin of tlir C. C. M. 11.0 unci Cora-lot-In.
uf tlio !iuo Chili.
The Chicago Girls' Mutual Benefit club
rejoices in tho unique distinction of hav-
ing h clubhouse all its own. Tho orig-
inal conception of tho club was only a
thought that took root in the hearts and
miuds of same half dozen Chicago girls
gatheiod together to discuss how a gills'
club could bo organized among the wage
earners of tho city. After some dtsens-
Mon tho few formed themselves into a
band of King's Daughters ami to gain
lunds fur their scheme gave a concert
with the pi cec.ls of which they touted u
cottage and formed classes for tlio study
of practical topics like sewing milli-
nery typewriting embroidery and the
rest.
Thee classes are taught by joinc two-
score volunteers and one pan! teacher.
The club members pay dues of ft cents
per week except the teacheis who pay
'JO cents per week to deftay partially
the espouse of a carnage its tho street
car lines do not run near the cottage.
All this of court-.) has been written over
many tunes m the htston of gills' clubs.
but the distinctive and interesting thing
abiiiit this organization is that when tho
small clubhouse became ovei crowded
the plucky girls determined to build a
clubhouse of their own. By arious en-
ter!. tinuieuts and subscriptions they
managed to raise enough money to se-
cure a lot. A friend then came to their
aid and made a genemns offer to build
the clubhouse charging tl.em G per cent
on tho investment to bo paid as lent
and giing them the pnvilego of paying
the principal any lime within live years.
The club took possession of the new
house in Muv Ibil".' and already neaily
one-half the debt is paid. Even in New-
York where tho winking gills' club
movement began and is supported by
wealthy patrons none of I lie clubs has
us yet attained the dignity ot a club-
house ol its own. The Thiity-cighth
Street club of which Miss Dodge is pies-
ident has .in entile house lented and
sublets p.u lions of it but must of the
socioli.is meet in rented rooms. Horosis
tho gieat pioneer chili with its large
membership has no permanent home of
its own and no headquuituib for tho
keeping ot its archives.
The. lane i'lubu protegeeot' Hull Ilonso

dams is another inteiestiug organiia-
I tion ol "iU liifinbets luiiig together in
communities in the club lashiou estab-
lished by men. It occupies a largo Hat
well lighted mid heated with hot and
cold waterand bathrooms on every Hour.
The pailois are ptcttih furnished tlio
libraries well slocked with books tho
tluee .lining tables well supplied with
appetizing tood picpnre.1 by tho club
steward who is lined m tho tegular
way by the committee. Th.no is a gen-
eral meeting of the members every two
weeks to attend to the business nflairs
of the clill) and to iegulate matteis gen-
erally. '1'hls might be called Ihe safety
valve of the machine lot if one has a
grievance oi n suggestion of any kind
this is the place at which she can be
heard. Each member feels her icsponsi-
bility as lawless and has the honor and
mtei est of the club at heart. There aro
no mles and legulat ions and each mem-
ber spends her evenings according toller
own inclination. As lar as it is given to
