greasy side, toss a lettuce leaf
into the pot. It will absorb the
grease and may be removed as
soon as it has done its Job.
Much Easier
When using both rind and Juice
of lemons or oranges, grate the
rind before squeezing. It is much
easier that way.
Use Drippings For Cooking
To save butter and margarine
ration points, use bacon drippings
for muffins, dark breads of all
kinds, corn bread, molasses, gin-
ger bread and spice cake; chicken
fat for pastries and cookies; suet
for pie crust.
Unused Soap
Don’t throw away small bits of
unused soap. Make them into a
soap jelly with boiling water. Soap
jelly is splendid for washing stock-
ings, gloves, lingerie and other
finery.

Tuberculosis is a disease spread
' by a living germ. The disease
claims 4,000 lives In Texas annually.
I Most of these deaths are among
[adults For each tuberculosis death
|there are approximately seven ac-
cases of the disease, making an
aated total of more than 28,000
Ituberculosis residents in the state.
Anyone may receive a tubercul-

Tuberculosis can be cured in the
great majority of cases if it is
diagnosed early, if treatment is
begun promptly, and if treatment
is prolonged over a sufficient leng-
th of time to insure against re-
lapse.
Plans are being made to give
a patch test for tuberculosis to
school children from the age of
11 years through high school age.
This test is not an injection, but
merely the applying of a bandaid
to the skin, preferably on the
chest. The bandaid is removed and
the reaction read. Those children
having a positive reaction will be
referred through the family doctor
to be X-rayed.
The tuberculosis Mobile Unit of
the State Health Department will
be in the county in January to
X-ray without cost those referred i
by the local doctor, or children j
with positive reactions to the patch
test. The price of the patch test
will be 10 cents per child.

MILITARY OBJECTIVE
Dry silver polish will brighten
up a brass bed . Add a bit of
bluing to soap suds before wash-
ing special glassware. This adds
lustre to the glass when wiped
dry ... If the bottoms of legs
of furniture are waxed they will
not scratch floors when moved

into the bottle and it won’t stick
Be sure to turn tops of
boxes of spices after using so they
are tightly closed. If they are
not kept air-tight the oils which
give spices aroma and their flav-
or, will be lost.
Take Care
Give your doctor a break, take
care of yourself to take care of
catching colds. If a cold does catch
up with you, try to combat it by
taking an enema, drinking a hot
lemonade or other alkaline solution,
grease the chest, nose and lips,
stimulate circulation with a hot
mustard foot bath, spend some of
your day time in bed, eat lightly
and drink large quantities of liq-
iud, especially water. Maybe some
of this treatment will work and
save having to bother your over-
worked doctor.

Keeping Clean
A subscriber writes us that many
housewives use cotton rag rugs
to cover the floor in front of their
kitchen sink, to help keep the
floor clean. She says she finds
that to starch this rag rug after
you wash it each time, will help
to make the rug lie closer to the
floor and not ruff up so much as
well as stay clean longer.

Highway patrolmen and peace
officers in Terry county placed
thirteen men in jail one night
last week, all arrested in Brown-
field and on the highway between
Brownfield and Seagraves, charged
with being drunk or driving an

officers evidently made no mis-
take as they all pleaded guilty
and paid fines, as per charges.

Easy on Ration Points
Bather than spend ration points
on salad oil, use cooked dressings
or sour cream dressings. Or make
dressings of eveporated milk, which;
as Westinghouse home economists
point out, costs fewer ration points
than salad oil and gives more food
value.
Give A lamp A Lift
A squatty table lamp is stingy
with light. To make it talle.r and
so obtqin a wider circle ,’of light,
place the lamp on a small stand
two or three inches high. The
stand can be made of wood and
stained to match the table on which
it is used or painted to harmonize
with
the lamp. Adding
to the
height
of a lamp
often
turns a
merely
decorative
lamp
into a
useful
reading lamp
Good Quick Breads
"Quick’’ is literally the word
for good quick breads Not only
do they take very little time to
make, but speed is essential from
the time the wet ingredients are
added to dry ones. Mix them
thoroughly but don’t beat. And
unlike making yeast breads, shor-
tening must be melted—that makes
the mixing process all the speedier.
Wringer Rolls Are Precious
When wringer rolls begin to lose
their grip, the glaze can be re-
moved by roughening the rolls
with coarse sandpaper, then wipe
off with a damp cloth. Use sand-
paper with discretion, of course.
Meat Stretcher
To stretch one pound of hambur-
ger from six to eight patties, mix
the meat with one egg and one-
half cup left over oatmeal, bread-
