HiSAOftS WHY HE IRki-!
GATfGN - AMENDMENT
SHOULD BE ADOPT-
: SB.
Have yon read the proposed
irrigation amendment for "West
Texas? Bon't oppose thia&ieas-
lire until you hare read it and
the following reasons for its
adoption.
Because tt will make West
exas one of the most prosper-
ous farming communlUs inhe
world
Because3 It will settle the
west and make a iparket for the
school lands.
Because It will decrease the
burden of taxation on the peo-
ple of Texas hy i ncreasing the
taxable yalues in the west.
Because It wilibenefit the
whole state by increasing the
population- the wealth and
productive capaciiy of the west.
Because It will cost you
nothing unless you are directly
benefitted
Because This amendment af-
feoS0D he arid and Bemi
arid regions of Texas.
Because It will furnish Tex-
as with sugar flour alfalfa and
potatoes that now come from
other states and that too at a
less cost to the consumer.
Because The resident land
owners of particular subdivis-
ions of any county in the state
are authorized by our present
constitution to incorporate
themselves into districts and
by vote levy a tax upon them-
selves for school purposes. The
people of West Texas ask only
the same privilege for irriga
tion.
Because5 Under the constitu-
tion of our state and the stat-
utes enacted thereunder the
resident citizens of incorporat-
ed cities and towns are author
ities to impose a tax npon their
property for water work street
and other public improvements.
The farmers of WestToxas ask
only the same privilege for ir-
rigation. Because Every time you
make a producer your make a
consumer. This is business for
all classes.
Because It is sorely needed
in Texas.
- Because The experience" of
Wnst Texas farmers for the
paet five years proves its neces-
sity. Because The expenditure of
large sums of Esoney necessary
forrbuilding irrigation canals
90 per cent of which will be for
labor will give employment to
thousands of workmen in Tex
as wiro are now idle.
Because With irrigation
Texas can produce all the hun-
dred million dollars worth of.
sugar now imported and there-
by lesson the price to the con-
sumer. Because The' five thousand
cars of potatoes now shipped
into the state from Colorado
can be produced at home and
sold for. less money. . .
Because irrigation will give
a certain return fof the Isbor'fcey fh tsailor lad" of . Setrt
and money expended.
Becausp It is the fairest and
most just irrigation plan " yet
presented. For the amendment
.once adoptedy only the resident
Iand owners of the proposed
district whose lands are irriga
bler have a right to voter in the
'Sr

BRITAIN NOT DECIDED.
The Government Would Ex-
press No Opinion as to
. Hawaii.
London June 24. In the
house of commons to-day the
parliamentay secretary of the
foreign office George N. Cru-
zon replied to the question of
Mr. Beckett conservative re-
garding Hawaiian annexation.
Mr. Beckett's question was
whether the government was
aware that queen Liliukalani
has been deposed by a small
body o! Americans who with-
out right have assumed sov-
ereignty over Hawa;i and now
to save themselves from the
resentment of the people have
requested the American gov-
ernment to annex Hawaii and
whether Great Britain propos-
es to allow this most impor-
tant coaling station to pass
into the hands oi the United
states without protest.
Mr. Cufzoii said her majes-
ty's g'dvernmeut did not ieel
called on to express an opin-
ion in relation to" the circum-
stances out of which the pre-
sent situation in Hawaii had
risen. The government was
aware that a proposal to annex
Hawaii to the United States
to the consideration of the
senate but no decision had
been reached.
Mr. Ctirzon added it would
bd the subject of her rriajesty's
government to see that what-
