BOXING AND WRESTLING CHAMPS
AWAIT GONG IN FINAL BOUTSVt
DEAR SIS:
No fooling, Christmas is really
coming at last. We have been so
busy with gunnery practices during
this month that it looked as if
Santa Claus would need a speed
boat if he was to catch up with us.
During next week we finish our
firings with night battle practice
by the broadside batteries and hope
to return to port by Friday morn-
ing. Then everybody is to get
holiday leave, one half of the Ships
Company going for eight days over
Christmas and the other half over
New Year's. Of the 1,300 in the
hip's Company only four thousand
0 r so wanted the Christmas section
of the leave The others were will-
ing to draw lots for it, or some-
thing. After the holiday leave
things happen quickly as we go to.
sea with the rest of the Battle
Force from six to eight January
and sail on the ninth for Bremer-
ton for two months overhaul in the
land where it rains so much that hip
boots are listed under the head of
bed room slippers. I am sorry to
miss this Christmas at home and
hope we shall be near enough next
year to make it. I have written
a letter to Santa Claus asking him
to give the Texas a nice East coast
billet for next year, and I don't
mean scuttlebutt. We shall try
to have a nice Christmas on board
for the children who are coming to
the Ship and help them to feel what
Christmas would n.ean for us if
xe were home. Love to all at home
Buddy.--000-
Lieut. McGurl as the officer in
charge of boxing and wrestling
on the Ship, has announced that
at the first favorable opportunity
and if possible before the holiday,
!he finals of the recent boxing and
wrestling eliminations are to be held
on board. Every evening next
week is apparently to be taken up
with the rehearsal and firing of the
five-inch guns in Night Battle but
t is possible that if the weather is
favorable on Wednesday afternoon
a "Rope Yarn Sunday" might be
secured for that day and the finals
f the bouts held during that after-
noon.
The finalists who are to meet to
compete for the bronze medals cast
for the Ship and which are to be
engraved with the names of the
winners in each event, are as fol-
lows:-
