.000The Big Fleet Concentration held each
year, and especially these years when
the problems are worked out in the
vicinity of the Panama Canal, is al-
ways an occasion for important ath-.
letic events, many of the contests decided
down here having become historic oc-
casions. During the week of 22 Feb-
ruary then the events will begin coming
on in regular order. In several of these
meets the Texas will have much at
stake beginning with the finals of the
Scouting Fleet Marine Whale Boat race
for the Barnett Cup on 23 February and
continuing on through until the finals in
boxing and wrestling are held on Sat-
urday afternoon 21 March.
The Fleet program will open with tie
Rifle and Pistol Matches on Wednesday
and Thursday the 25th and 26th of Fe'
ruary, these events being both held
the morning while on the afternoon c
of the latter day the semi-finals of t'
baseball eliminations are to be held.
Friday the 27th will see the final shoot-
ing of the Rifle and Pistol Matches in
the morning while the finals of the
baseball, if the deciding contests are
reached by that time are to be played
in the afternoon. During this afternoon
also the Officers' Golf Tournament will
get under way at the Panama Country
Club.
Saturday morning will find the im-
portant rowing races coming up on the
28th of February. It is hardly probabLe
that Ensign Eddy's new cutter crew will
take their boat into the water for that
race but it is the day when the Texas
Marine Whale Boat crew will row in
the All-Navy Championship for the All-
Navy Cup. It is therefore a day to
which this Ship is looking with high
hopes and every man of Sergeant Gard-
ner's crew can be certain of emphatic
and ethusiastic support from every mem-
ber of the Ship's Company when they
go down to the starting point for that
important event.
On that afternoon of 28 February t'
swimming events will also be staged in
the Balboa Pool, while the final events of
baseball are to be played if any games
are still undecided. Sunday March 1st
is the day for the Officers' tennis, and
then the Fleet problems are to be re-
sumed until the final athletic events in
wrestling and boxing will be called up
on Saturday afternoon 21 March.
SEND THE STEER HOMETEXAS OFFICERS TO TAKE PART
AS OFFICIALS IN ATHLETICS
Besides the events in which the Texas
will officially participate during the pro-
gram of Fleet athletics a number of offi-
cers attached to this Ship will also appear
in the role of officials. Lieutenant Huff
will be seen as the official umpire on
bases for the opening of the big baseball
series on Thursday afternoon 26 Feb-
ruary. Lieutenant (jg) W. H. Ashford,
Jr., of the Texas Aviation unit has been
selected as the official referee for the
Finals of the Fleet Wrestling on Satur-
day afternoon 21 March.
Doctor Ridout of the Ship has been a-
ppointed the official Medical Officer for
the examination of both the boxing ast
wrestling contestants. All of those en
tries will report on the Texas f .r official
weighing in and examination by Doctor
Ridout on the morning of 21 March.
Doctor Kellum, of the Maryland, will av-
sist Doctor Ridout as the additional med-
ical officer at the ringside on that afte'-
noon. All the boxing and wrestling con-
testants are to report to the Fleet Athle-
tic Officer at the Balboa Stadium at 1330
on 21 March and to report to the official
referees at the ringside at 1400. The
hands of the boxes are examined and the
gloves put on in advance of the hour for
the various bouts so as not to lose time.
In the racing events which take place
on the morning of 28 Ferbruary Lieut.
(jg)., J. W. Bays, is to officiate as one of
the Judges of the Course in the first of
two sets of officials who are to alternate
in the various races. The orders of these
races is as follows:
