The resilience of Capt. Rk Dalzell
on Elizabeth street is being repaint-
ed.. The river rose here during last
night over two inenes but it has
been about a stand all day.
To-day old Sol crosses the "line"
to carrv the summer to the other
side of the globe. Its departure is
not mourned here.
The King's Daughters will hold
their reunion meeting Saturday af-
ternoon at 5 o'clock at the resid-
ence of 3lrs. Oi d Kenedy.
The city authorities are doing
good work tilling up low places in
the streets and endeavoring to im-
prove the sanitary condition of the
town .
Every citizen should be on hand
at the court house this evening to
hear the proposition that will be
made for the construction of a rail-
road to Brownsville.
Brownsville is badly in need or
Waterworks and electric work and
if possible it i hoped that the city
tlads will do their utmost to procure
these great conveniences for the
city .
The need of hotel accommoda-
tions in Brownsville was neer more
apparent than at presiMit when the
strangers within our -rates find it
difficult to obtain comfortable lodg
ings surely it Would pay someone
to open a good hotel hero.
We are pleased to learn that Mrs.
wosiah Turner and daughter Miss
Teresa both of whom have been
'quite ill for two of three weeks
past are muck better now and hope
they may soon recover their usual
good health. Mr. Turner has had
his hands full nursing his sick wife
and daughter.
A letter has been received from
Miss E. S. Cummin who is now at
lior home near Memphis Tenn.
having returned there from Monte
rev saying that she made the trip
safely ana has been resting comfort-
ably since her arrival. She is still
quite lame howevef from the ef-
fects of the fall which she had
while at Saltillo. Miss Cummin'
many friends hero regret sincerely
that her injury was such as to
oblige her to return home ard hope
she nlay soon recover entire from
its effects and come back lo Drowns
Tille where she is very much misl
ed. The mission school which was!

ATTEND TIUS MEETING.
It is sincerely hoped that every
citizen who can do so will be at the
court house this evening to receive
the proposition that will be made
by representatives of the Chicago
St. Louis & Texas Airline railroad
company for the construction of a
railraad from Brownsville. It
should be remembered by any who
feel inclined to display indiffer-
ence on this vital matter that these
gentlemen do not come unheralded
amongst us. The companv which
they represent has been working
on this project for over a year past.
They have surveyed almost the en
tire distance for the proposed road.
JThev have secured right of wav for
nearly the same distance. Almost
the full amount of the bonus re-
quired by them has been subscribed
by property owners along the line .
The fact that the investigation of
the company's status and proposition
by the San Antonio business men's
club com rising the leading mon-
eyed men of that city proved en-
tirely satisfactory and the work of
raising the required bonus is now
being pushed there should also in-
spire our citizens with confidence.
The Herald understands that
the propositions to be placed before
the citizens of Cameron and tlidal-
go counties to-night will be fair
and libera and that the financial
backing of the company will also
be demonstrated satisfactorily to
all. In justice to ourselves as well
as to the gentlemen who have asked
us to hear them every one who can
do so should attend this meeting
and como prepared to believe and
hope for the best. Brownsville
nmt ha ye a railroad unless it ex-
pects to sink into the mire of per
manent stagnation and these gen-
tlemen In ve come to offer t6 build
us a railroad if we will do our part
towards it. Let everyone come
determined to do his best for the
achievement of our long deferred
hope of securing a railroad.

THE UNION HOl?.-
The entertainment given by the
Casino Union in Matamoros last
evening was unusually pleasant
owing perhaps to the cool weather
which made dancing a more agree-
able pastime than for some months
past. The gentlemen having charge
of the affairspared no pains in mak-
ing arrangements and nothing was
left undone for the pleasure or com-
fort of their guests. The music was
excellent and a dainty and attrac
tive supper was served in the patio
about midnight. The attendance
was quite large including the leacU
ing society people of both Matamo
ros and Brownsville. Those who
