MANY PROBLEMS FOR
FUTURE INVENTORS

double the speed of our fastest ex-
press trains. They admit that such
speed cannot be attained with the pres-
ent reciprocating counter-balanced lo-
comotive: that it would pound both
Itself and the roadbed to pieces. But
they say with a perfect rotary en&ine
and an ideal roadbed .they can carry
passengers from Washington to New-
York more quickly than they do from
Philadelphia to New York today and
that the trip from New York to Chi-
cago could be made between lunch .
and dinner time. J
Power of Nifxoen. j
Nitrogen when applied to the soil in J
proper quantities possesses the almost
magical power of making four blades i
of grass grow -where one grew before. I
It is one of the most plentiful A things J
In the world existing in incalculable '
quantities in free air but it ccme3 1
down only with the lightning stroke i
nad the rain drop and then in insuffi-
cient quantities. So it is now being I
extracted f romj the air by electro-me-
chanical methods. The inventor whp :
will find a cheap method of extracting
it will make the United States able i
to support a population of 300.000.QOO .
people more advantageously than it I
now. supports 100000000.
The properties of that latest and
greatest of the discovered elements
radium are so wonderful as to beggar i
description. A ton of it would heat I
and light a palace through thousands
of generations losing not more than.!
an ounce of weight or energy in 1000- i
000 3-ears. Sir J. J. Thompson before
the Royal institution of England not j
long ago attempted to describe some
of its powers. He declared that if a
man could use it in war he might hurl
projectiles as big as houses with a ve-
locity a thousand times greater than
that of the flne'st projectile military
BCience has yet produced. Flour worm
larvae have been made to live three
times as long as their natural span
of life both as larva and as moth. It
was as if a boy had been made to live
more than 200 years and still retained
his youth. Applications of radium
rays have made monsters out of tad-
poles and have artificially fertilized
the eggs of the sea urchin. Radium.
is so elusive that it is worth 3000 times
Its weight in gold. Yef indications are
that it is plentiful awaiting only the
proper formula for its extraction.
Liquid Air Possibilities.
The possibilities of liquid air are no
less interesting than those of radium.
Already methods of making it cheaply
have been attained. The gaseous air
in a small room can be compressed
Into a bucketful of liquid air. Put a
piece of steel Into it and although
the liquid air is cold enough to freeze
mercury it will burn the" steel as easily

ARIZONA AXD SUFFRAGE.
From Bisbee (.Ariz.) Review.
A Phoenix correspondent tells the
history of a fight for woman suffrage
in Arizona which failed in Phoenix
last "week in an article in The El Paso
Herald. He says that anything witha

confined. Enclose it In an air tight
vessel and an explosion follows that
would make an explosion of nitro-
glycerin seem like a baby firecracker
In comparison. The man who will ef-
fectively harness liquid air may work
even more of a transformation in hu-
man existence than did those -who gave
us our modern applications of elec-
tricity. One scarcely can realise how rapidly
the tide of invention is rising Jn the j
wprla today. The late Prox. Langley
once declared heTiad archaeological

socalled labor party inserted in its
platform a demand for equal suffrage

RECALL IS FATAL.
From Bisbee (Ariz.) Review.
The opinion is -widespread that the
action of the Arizona constitutional
convention in agreeing to put Into the
constitution a recall provision which
-will reach the judiciary -will end Ari-
zona's present hope of statehood.
Commenting on this most radical of
all proposed provisions The El Paso
Herald says that if Arizona applies
the "recall" to the judiciarj it is al-
stone ax by rubbing it on another J most inconceivable that the people of
stone. Certain it is that Andrew Jack-
son had no better means of communi
cating the victory of New Orleans toj
"Washington than that used in the days
of Abraham of Xerxes. The octoge-
narian of today has seen more human
progres than all the generations since
Adam. He lias seen man multiply his
powers in vast proportions: add In-
finitely to his well being; and subtract
wonderfully from his limitations.
Standing on
the territory will favor such an out
rageous proposition and If they do
however It is a moral certainty that
this defect alone will be enough to
prevent the acceptance of the consti-
tution by the president and congress.

GRAND JURY SYSTEM.
From Prescott (Ariz. Courier.
The El Paso Herald a Republican
i raper. and one 01 tne largest as wen
the acropolis of the as most Influential newspapers in the
PTPatPRt RO vpArs in all history and I southwest says that Arizona s con-
peering from that eminence Into the J biltution convention has performed a
future the inventors today tell us that
the Golden Age has not yet dawned;
that the only Golden Age they see is
the one of realizing that illimitable
possibilities ai yet ahead and that
we are seemingly as far removed from
the Ultima Thule of what genius may
accomplish as we were years ago.
They believe that each invention opens
new fields of possibilities and that no
erreat nubile service and nas taKen
a most commendable progressive step
in virtually abolishing the grand Jury
system. Unifr the provision which
has been adopted by the convention
criminal trials shall be had upon
indictment or information by a public
prosecutor to call a grand jury in ses-
sion when the occasion demands it.
The action of the Arizona convention

a matter of American pride that her l example thus set could be followed
genius has perfected a majority of the with advantage by every other state
race benefiting inventions of modern i in the union.

American inventors are still in
