Overseas since late in March, Oran, co-
pilot on a B-17 stationed in England,
wrote he had been cited for the air medal.
He also described some of his raids, saying
they got back one time with 100 holes in
their ship. Oran received his commis-
sion at the Army Air Force school, Law-
renceville, Ill., and had operational train-
ing at Sioux City, Iowa.
This letter from Oran was received the
first part of May.
"Here I am in the Big League and
there's no doubt about the winner, but
the question is how many innings will
have to be played, and how many will
get struck out before the game is won. I
have only 28 more missions to make be-
fore I wind up here and head for Tokyo.
Capt. Ed Bigelow is a staff Navigator
here and he led the whole wing of 17's
that I flew with on a long raid. He kept
us away from most of the flak areas, but
we didn't go through unscratched. I had
rather fly a Fortress in combat than any
other ship in the sky. Sometimes they
come in with only two-thirds of a wing
on one side and maybe the tail shot half
off. I'm looking forward to hearing news
of H-SU and H-SU exes and alumni."
