Joseph Powell Joins Staff
As VP for Business AffairsFormer

military comptroller Joseph
of Charleston, South Caro-lina, has been named vice president
for business affairs at Hardin-Simmons
University, Dr. Elwin L. Skiles, H-SU
president, announced. Powell's ap-
pointment completes the reorganization
of the administration, Dr. Skiles said.
The university will have three vice
presidents, Dr. Edward G. Groesbeck,
vice president for academic affairs, Dr.
Lee Hemphill, vice president for de-
velopment and Powell.
Prior to coming to H-SU, Powell was
business manager for Baptist College
at Charleston, Charleston, South Caro-
lina. He is the former senior assistant to
the comptroller of the Citadel, military
college of South Carolina and comptrol-
ler and supply officer at the Charleston
Naval Station. He is also the former
Navy exchange officer in the Charles-
ton area.
Other Naval supply corps assign-
ments include military petroleum sup-
ply agency, Washington, D. C.; USS
Consolation (AH-15), Pacific Command;
Naval Training Center, Bainbridge,
Maryland; Naval Storehouse, Gulfport,
Mississippi; Port Director's Office, San
Pedro, California and Naval Attache
Office, London, England.
"Powell has had varied responsibili-
ties in procurement, disbursing of
funds, preparing and controlling of
budgets, auditing and purchasing as
well as personnel administration. This
experience will be invaluable in his
work with the university," Dr. Skiles
explained.
A graduate of Oklahoma Baptist Uni-
versity, Powell has done graduate study
at George Washington University. He
had done further study at Harvard

The Hardin-Simmons University Art-
ist Series for 1967-68 will include five
world known shows, Dr. W. O. Beazley,
coordinator of university relations, an-
nounced.
Making a return appearance to Abi-
lene, Mantovani and his Orchestra will
open the Artist Series season on No-
vember 3 in Behrens Chapel at 8:15 p.m.
Making his fourth visit to the Big
Country area, Fred Waring and the
Pennsylvanians will appear December
4. A newcomer to Abilene audiences
will be Yugoslavia's Branko Krsmano-
vich Chorus of 80 mixed voices, one of
Europe's oldest choral ensembles. This
group will appear March 7.
The Krsmanovich Chorus is a part of
Belgrade University's Association forCalendar of Events

at the Unviersity of Kentucky.
Powell's father-in-law, Dr. Jesse
Hodges wrote the H-SU anthem and
Mrs. Hodges was the first all-college
queen. Dr. and Mrs. Hodges, now of
Oklahoma City, were honored during
the diamond jubilee Founder's Day ac-
tivities at H-SU. The Hodges are gradu-
ates of the Simmons class of 1917.
Before moving to Wichita Falls,
Powell's father once operated a hard-
ware store in Abilene while his brother
Ed, a graduate of H-SU, was at one
time sheriff of Taylor County.
Mrs. Powell is president of the Charles-
ton Federated Music Club and cellist in
the Charleston Symphony. She is a
'church organist and choir director.
Powell is a Sunday School teacher,
Baptist deacon, Training Union direc-
tor, and treasurer of the Charleston
Baptist Association. He is a member
of the board of directors of the Civitan
Club and a member of the Hobcaw
Yacht Club.
Sharing Mrs. Powell's interest in
music are the three oldest daughters
who play string instruments, violin,
viola and cello. Constance is a senior at
Oberlin College and studied Chinese
at Yale University this summer, Myra
Jane is a sophomore nursing student at
Baylor University and Susan, a high
school junior, plays violin in the
Charleston Symphony Orchestra. Susan
has spent the summer at Brevard Music
Camp in North Carolina. The Powell's
have two other children, Carol, 9 and
Joseph, III, 8.
"The Powell family will be distinct
assets to HI-SU and community life,"
Dr. Skiles said.Night

40 men and 40 women are both gradu-
ate and undergraduate students study-
ing art, science, medicine as well as
music.
Bogdan Babich, "A man who makes
musical miracles with his 80 singers," is
the conductor. For the Abilene concert,
the chorus will feature a wide variety
of color and design. The group has
toured America three times, Europe
and Asia.
The John Gary Show will be May 7.
The fifth program in the Artist Series
is yet to be booked, Dr. Beazley said.
