March, 1979 RANGE RIDER
Women 's ten nis looks optimisticContinued from page 3B
Cathy Dyer of Baird and Karon Hash of Albany.
None of the women are seniors and three are fresh-
men, giving the team a highly optimistic future.
Campbell transferred to Hardin-Simmons after
her freshman year at Austin College. She played No.
I singles and doubles for the Cowgirls last spring and
possessthe top all-around game on the team.
"Pam has good ground strokes and has shown
much improvement on her net game," says Owens.
Junior Nancy Warters of Abilene has played
tennis at Hardin-Simmons for two years and will give
the team much-needed stability with her collegiate
experience.
"Nancy also has a good all-around game. Her
strong points are her competitiveness and, of course,
her experience playing at Abilene High and as a
letterman for us."
Another junior, Gail Wilson of Grandville,
Michigan, is the most improved player on the team.
Gail also has a year's experience as a Cowgirl and
may become a valuable performer this spring.
"Gail has sound strokes in every area of her tennis
game," Owens said. "With the type of schedule we
have, she could really develop into a good collegiate
player."Beth Hodgson is the fourth Cowgirl with
collegiate experience and Owens is hoping for good
things from her. "Beth has also shown a lot of im-
provement this year over last year. She has all
around good strokes but needs a more consistant
overall game. Hodgson is from Albuquerque, New
Mexico.
Owens landed a real catch in signing Vaughan
who starred for the Class 5-AAAA Cougars. Because
her tennis education came in Abilene, she has been
exposed to tough competition, much of it on the
collegiate level at summer tournaments. That ad-
vantage will help her adapt quickly to collegiate
'tennis this spring.
"Overall, Debbie has the strongest net game on
the squad. With more experience with collegiate
competition, she should develop into one of the
strongest players we've ever had."
Owens has two excellent athletes in his area fresh-
man. He calls Dyer the most competitive player on
the squad. "Being a freshman, she is inexperienced
but she really gives it all she's got when she plays."
Dyer will need to improve the consistency of her
game in preparation for the spring schedule.
Hash lettered in basketball and track in addition
to tennis at Albany High School. Her speed andagility are definite advantages on the tennis court.
"Karon is a natural all-around athlete. She is very
competitive and, with experience on the collegiate
level and a more consistant overall game, she will
develop into one of our top players."
Because of the lack of indoor facilities, the team
had more lay-off time than it wanted due to the snow
and ice that covered Abilene after the Christmas
break. Owens took advantage of the time to run the
team through basic drills.
"The thing that has impressed me about the girls is
that they have worked hard and drilled a lot on their
tennis game," stated Owens.
The Cowgirls wins this season have come over
Abilene Christian University (three times), St.
Mary's University, West Texas State, Weatherford
College, Angelo State, and Lubbock Christian. The
have lost twice to South Plains College and - once
each to Angelo State and the Trinity JV.
Owens has enjoyed his new coaching role and
excitedly looks to the future for women's tennis at
Hardin-Simmons.
"We are classified as a small college now, but we
will work towards becoming a large college in
classification. What we are looking for is to get in
with the best of them."More 'Folks and facts...
