Tennis Teams
Favored to Return
to National Tourney
The nationally ranked Hardin-
Simmons University tennis teams, under
first-year coach Lance Drake, are the
heavy favorites to repeat as TIAA and
NAIA District champions this spring.
Both teams return the bulk of their
squad from last year that dominated the
Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association
and advanced to the NAIA national
tournament in Kansas City by winning the
District VIII crown. The men open the
season as the 19th-ranked team in the
nation, while the Cowgirls are rated 23rd.
Drake, who formerly coached at
Sweetwater and Howard Payne before
replacing Cheryl Priddy at HSU this year,
welcomes back five returners on the
men's team and five on the women's
squad. Nine of the 13 team members are
from Abilene, two hail from Sweetwater,
and one is from Brownwood.
The men are led by seniors Oscar
Martinez, an Academic All-American
from Abilene High, and Cooper's Kyle
Canon, along with former Sweetwater
teammates Christopher Lewis and Lance
Hughey who are both sophomores. Chris
Proctor, a freshman from Cooper, and
junior Joseph Marney from Dumas round
out the team.
Abilene Cooper provides four of the
seven members on the Cowgirls, includ-
ing seniors Davonne Davenport and
Leanne Goodin, who are ranked 20th in
women's doubles. The pair also played as
a team at Madison Middle school and
Cooper. Davenport, an All-TIAA and All-
District pick last year, is also ranked 48th
in singles.
Lisa Holloway, a junior, and senior
Karen Surovic, also both from Cooper,
along with Abilene High junior Stacy
Vanghn, Brownwood sophomore Melody
Lowery, and Kori King-Atkins, a fresh-
man from Abilene High, round out the
team.

"Power" Their Way
to TIAA Title
HSU baseball coach Marvin "Doc"
Stringfellow is counting on 14 lettermen
and a crop of young pitching arms to lead
the Cowboys to their first TIAA title.
The Cowboys, who were 28-19 last
year, finished as the runner-up in the
Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
Stringfellow hopes the transition from
speed to power will put them on top.
"The big thing that stands out is that
we have more power at the plate and a
little less speed," said Stringfellow. "We
have more guys who can pop the ball, but
the penalty for that is that we have a little
less speed."
Leading the hit parade is senior
rightfielder Blake Kelly (.290, 7 homers,
39 RBI); junior shortstop Joe Scarzone (8
homers, 29 RBI); and junior first
baseman James Bostick (7 homers, 22
RBI).
They will be joined in the middle of
the lineup by a pair of juniors, Toby
Martinez and Craig Rogers, who left the
team after their freshman seasons, but
have returned.
Martinez, who hit .300 with five
homers and 28 RBI as a freshman,
returns to left field after sitting out last
season, while Rogers will occupy third
base again after playing last year at NCAA
I Winthrop College. He hit .255 as a
freshman.Veteran pitchers Lincoln Davis and
Scott Prichard, both seniors, return to
anchor the pitching staff along with junior
reliever Gabe Bender. Several freshmen,
including Darren Swanner, Shane Causey,
and Brandt Jenkins, will compete for
starting assignments, while junior transfer
Brett Thompson will help in the bullpen.
The schedule is favorable to HSU this
year with 29 of the 45 games at home. The
team will play 17 straight home games in
March, including dates with defending
national champion St. Francis of Illinois on
March 1.
Cowgirls Advance to
National Tourney
The Hardin-Simmons University
women's basketball team, co-champions
of the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic
Association, made its first trip to the
national women's tournament in
Monmouth, OR.
The fifth-seeded Cowgirls, guided by
first-year coachJulie Roewe, were
defeated in their initial competition by
Shawnee State (Ohio), the sixteenth seed,
77-64, in the second round of the NAIA
Division II national women's basketball
tournament at Western Oregon State
College.
However, the Cowgirls completed
their season with a 24-4 record.
Senior Missy Davis from Wylie led
HSU with 27 points, making 12 of 18 field
goals.4th Ranked Lady Golfers Can Double Up on
TournamentAppearances
The Cowgirl golf team, ranked fourth in the NCAA II pre-Season poll, has an
opportunity to make history of sorts by appearing in two national championships in one
year.
HSU, dual members m NCAA and NAIA, has finished fifth in the last two NCAA II
tournaments and is a strong favorite to again make the field in this year's event, but they
can also earn a slot in the NAIA tournament.
The NAIA is recognizing women's golf as a championship sport this season and will
use a district tournament to qualify representatives to decide a national champion.
Normally, the NCAA requires members schools to declare for just one national
championship, but HSU can make both tournaments by dropping one regular season
tournament and classifying the NAIA event as part of the regular season schedule.
Hardin-Simmons enjoyed a good fall season, winning one tournament to earn
fourth-place ranking. Individually, sophomore Linda DeLude is rated tenth, Tiffany
Grigsby, a junior, is 13th; and freshman Laura Trout is 14th. A fourth member of the
squad, junior Mandi Johnson, is also among the top 30, ranked 26th.
