My wife and I like to drive to Hobby Airport In Houston
and catch Southwest Airlines flight to the Rio Grande
Valley. It's two people for one. We do this about once a
year. It's a cheap. Kin way to spend a long weekend. The
confluence of the Rio Grande into the Gulf of Mexico at
Boca Chlca Is something to see. but that will have to be In
another column.
We usually stay at Ft. Brown Motel In Brownsville, and
from there you can walk across the border Into
Matamoras. A good restaurant within walking distance Is
Garcia's. Another good restaurant In Matamoras Is the
Drive Inn, which Is a $5 cab ride from the border.
But what I want to talk about Is Mexico Highway 2. It
runs almost the entire length of the border and parallels
the Rio Grande. We will take Highway 2 from Matamoras
to Reynosa about 66 miles away (although the highway is
marked in meters), and then come back Into the U.S. at
McAllen.
Highway 2. as far as physical condition, is about like
Highway 105. only a little rougher. But the real sight to
see Is not the highway Itself, but what is along side of It.
If the members of the U.S. Congress had driven Highway
2, they would never have approved NAF.TA There Is no
way that the standard of living In Mexico can be brought
up to our standards. The houses along the highway are
best described as dilapidated shacks which no one In the
U.S. would live In. Cows, goats and horses are staked on
ropes along the right of way. eating the meager grass
available. On a rainy day the highway becomes almost
untravelable due to the slickness and washouts.
About 20 miles from destination end Is a town named
Rio Bravo. Mexico. We were there about 3 p.m. on a
January day. a sunny January day, and it was almost
dark due to the haze created by the emissions from the
nearby chemical plant. The odor from the chemical plant
was matched only by the odor of sewer which stems to
permeate the entire town of Rio Bravo. It Is horrible.
I have always considered myself a liberal on social
causes, and I would help the Mexican people If I knew
how. But thank God. I live In the U.SA
Luv ya, Willie.
