Summary State Revenues and
Receipts to the Texas State Government for
the fiscal year ended Aug. 31, 1953, were
estimated at $742,500,000 on basis of actual
receipts during the first eleven months of the
fiscal year, as reported by the Comptroller of
Public Accounts. Receipts for the first eleven
months of the fiscal year were $679,328,312, as
compared with $631,465,102 for the correspond-
ing period of the preceding fiscal year. Re-
ceipts for the entire fiscal year ended Aug.
31, 1952, were $689,323,610. These totals in-
clude all revenue receipts from taxes, fees,
interest, penalties that can be used to defray
cost of operating the State Government.
Expenditures for operation of the State
Government and its Institutions during the
fiscal year ended Aug. 31, 1953, were $646,071,-
552, as estimated from expenditures for the
first eleven months as reported by the Comp-
troller of Public Accounts. Expenditures to
defray cost of running the government during
the first eleven months of the year were
$585,793,666, as compared with $548,182,455 for
the first eleven months of the preceding year.
Expenditures for the entire fiscal year ended
Aug. 31, 1952 were $617,210,759.
Receipts for the fiscal biennium ended Aug.
31, 1953, using estimate for 1953,. were $1,431,-
823,610. Expenditures were $1,263,282,311.
Receipts exceeded expenditures by $72,112,851
in the fiscal year 1952. Receipts exceeded
expenditures by $96,428,448 in the fiscal year
1953, as estimated from the operations of the
first eleven months. However, these sur-
pluses of receipts over expenditures can not
be taken as a balancing of the books for the
year. These figures are a net sum of the
balances in more than one hundred state
funds, big and little, against some of which
were many outstanding obligations at the end
of the year. The general revenue fund
showed a net cash balance of $32,361,637 on
July 31, 1953, and there were varying balances
in the other larger state funds. The State
Government was in healthful financial condi-
tion at the end of the fiscal year 1953.
Table below shows receipts to the State
Government for the first eleven months (to
July 31) of the fiscal year which ended Aug.
31, 1953, by chief sources of revenue, with
corresponding figures for the first eleven
months of the preceding fiscal year, as re-
ported by the State Comptroller of Public
Accounts, Austin.
