No. 2 grain sorghum must have
a minimum test weight of 55
pounds per bushel and damaged
kernels must not run higher
than 5 percent.
Ronnie Schmidt, foreman for
A C. Sien Jr who has some 4(M>
acres in grain sorghum west of
Aransas Pass, said about a
third of their acreage has been
cut.
"We re doing better than we within the South Texas Region
expected after the rain," said
Schmidt. "We’ve lost a little per
-acre yield, but it's looking
better than I thought it would at
first.”
Schmidt said that damage
was running 15 to 20 percent,
but that damage and yield
varied with the particular
variety of grain sorghum which
had been planted.
"We planted four
varieties, and some
seem to withstand
better than others,” said
Schmidt, explaining that one
variety they had planted was
yielding 42-44 pounds per bushel
and another was cutting 55-56
pounds per bushel
“One variety hasn’t been cut
yet. but it looks pretty good ”
Like most of the area
farmers, Schmidt hopes the
dry, sunny weather will
continue through completion of
the harvest.
"We haven't been able to cut
any for a couple of days. It’s
still wet in a couple of places,
but we're hoping to get our
combine back out tomorrow
(Wednesday),”

Grain Sorghum Harvest 7
More Than Half Complete
With good weather enabling
farmers to resume the grain
sorghum harvest interrupted by
heavy rains in early July, more
than half of the 1976 crop is now
out of the fields
Though wet ground is still
hampering combining in some
areas, most producers were
able to resume cutting last
week, and the harvest is
progressing rapidly
"We're really in high gear
now,” said Dan Pawlik, San
Patricio County agriculture
extension agent. “Trucks are
stacking up at the elevators.”
Pawlik estimated that grain
harvesting operations in the
county are "better than 50
percent complete, probably
approaching 60 percent.”
"The thing we need now mure
than anything is continued fair
weather." If there is no
additional rainfall added to the
almost 16 inches which fell in an
11-day period, farmers should
be able to complete the harvest
just in time to start on cotton
Regarding damage sustained
in the deluges earlier this
month, most estimates place
the farmers’ losses at some-
what less than originally pre
dieted
"The amount we’re getting is
a little bit higher than we
