Net Fishing
Ban Approved
By TP&WD
In a controversial move. th«- Texas
Parks and Wildlife Commission voted
Friday. April 18. to ban net fin fishing in
Nueces Ray
The action came during a 12 hour hear
ing of the TP4WD Commissioners in
Austin
Closing of the bay is planned within
about 90 days Asked the basis for the
TP4WT) decision. Tom Moore, head of
the Parks and Wildlife Coastal Fisheries
Office explained that despite claims by
commercial fishermen that fish are plen
tiful as ever, studies have shown a
sizeable decline in the redfish and speckl
ed trout populations in the Corpus Christi
area
He added that the decline is of such
proportion that he foresees no time soon
when the ban will be lifted
Besides the ban on Nueces Bay. the
TP4WD adopted six other proposals

Program Seeking Turtle Colony
Padre Island National Seashore is once
again preparing for the arrival of 2.000
Kemp's Ridley sea turtle eggs from Mex
ico in a continuing effort to start a second
home for the moat endangered species of
sea turtles in the world
To ensure the survival of the Kemp's
Rid)*y < Lepidochelys Kempt i, three
agencies of the federal government, the
State of Texas and the Republic of Mex
ico have devised an experimental scien
tific plan which will hopefully establish a
secondary breeding population of the tur-
tle on the beaches of Padre Island Na
tional Seashore
Sporadic nesting of the Kemp’s Ridley
has been documented on Padre Island in
the recent past, and for this reason.
Padre Island National Seashore was
chosen for an effort such as this
This international multi agency pro
ject involves scientific talents and
resources from the following agencies
Institute Naciuna) de Peaca, National
Park Service. U S Fish and Wildlife Ser
vice. National Marine Fisheries Service
and the Texas Parks and Wildlife
Department
The Ridley's principal nesting area a
16-mile stretch of beach at Playa de Ran
cho Nuevo. Tamaulipas. Mexico, has
been severely plundered since its
discovery putting the species in severe
jeopardy
In 1*47. the Rancho Nuevo nesting area
harbored the eggs of an estimated 40.000
females In 1979 only 500 750 females
were observed along the same stretch of
beach
The rapid decline in the Ridley popula
tion came about because the eggs are a
highly marketable commodity^ con
sidered a delicacy and some believe, an
aphrodisiac
For years the eggs were hauled from
Rancho Nuevo to distant markets by the
truckload
Although the protection of the nesting
beach in Mexico has txx-n an ongoing pro-
gram since 1966 the decline in breeding
adults has not tx-en slowed
Tixiay. the primary cause of the
Ridley’s decline is delieved to be the in
cidental take of turtles by commercial
shrimp trawlers in the Gulf of Mexico
