Sports week
By John Low man
As many here already know, the
junior varsity Panther football team
didn't play their final scheduled sea-
son game.
The contest — which would have
been against the Ingleside
Mustangs — was played, but the JV
'Stangs faced an opponent other
than the JV Pack, who remained
Idle. The AP squad — 13 strong on
game day after grades and a few
players moving up to varsity — were
upset about the cancellation. And
understandably so.
The players worked all season,
overcoming the odds of having few
replacements and still sticking
together. Many of those players are
the varsity of the future, and hope-
fully they will continue working
toward a positive, winning program.
That's not the question today,
though. Those 13 athletes were
denied — in their minds — the right
to culminate their season. But
there’s more to the story than a
group of 13 striving to play four 12-
mlnute quarters.
Two Aransas Pass coaches, Jim
Berryhill and AP athletic director
Gary Davenport, explained the deci-
sion matter-of-factly — the team
didn't play for two reasons. First,
several players repeatedly failed to
show up for practice, then expected
to play on Thursday night. Second,
the coaches were genuinely con-
cerned for the health of 13 kids
playing a game designed for a squad
of 22 or more.
The coaches were simply doing
their Jobs. Everyone wants to win,
and a successful program begins

Mustangs running back
Bubba Jackson chalked up
214 yards and three touch-
downs on 36 carries in the
Mustangs' 24-0 bi-distrlct
shutout of the Jourdanton
Indians here Friday. 1
The Mustangs are turning
their first post-season berth
in over 20 years Into suc-
cess, as the Horseman
defense held the once-
ranked Indians to 64 yards
on the ground Friday.
Jourdanton was unable to
make anything of the open-
ing kickoff, punting after
three plays. The 'Stangs
took thetr first possession
53 yards on 10 plays as
Jackson scored from four
yards out with 5:55 left in
the first frame'. Victor
Trevino added the PAT to
put the Mustangs on top 7-
0.
The Mustang defense set
the stage for the night,
again holding Jourdanton
to three and out. Ingleside
took the ensuing punt 33
yards on 12 plays, but
Trevino missed what would
have normally been a 27-
yard chip-shot field goal
against the wind.
Ingleside again held the
Indians to three and out to
set up another Mustang
score. Fullback Larry
