Demonstrations
on fires slated
at DC school
DELL CITY--Students of Dell
City Independent school will
have an opportunity to see for
themselves how fire can be
man's best friend or his worst
enemy by observing a graphic
fire demonstration to be pre-
sented at 2:00 p. m. on Friday,
March 12, 1965, H.W. Harmon
superintendent announced to-
day.
The demonstration, in seven
parts, will be given under the
direction of Joe Smetana, Safe-
ty Director of the Texas Farm
Bureau.
A variety of demonstration
equipment will be placed on
tables 16 feet in length to illus-
trate seven basic points: (l)what
fire is; (2) how to control fires;
(3) the fact that nothing is fire-
proof; (4) kitchen fires and their
control; (5) fuel vapors; (6) the
power of petroleum products;
and (7) household wiring and
overloaded electrical circuits.
Smetana will point out that
fire is like a three-legged stool
--it can't work with one of the
legs missing. The "legs" fire
depends on are: (1) fuel, (2)
heat, and (3) air. Yet, in
American homes these three
things come together in deadly
and destructive combination
every 57 seconds—an average
of 1, 500 home fires every day,
according to Smetana.
"That's eight times the num-
ber of fires in factories and
stores. Worse yet, four out of
five of all fire deaths occur in
homes, and for every death
there are about 100 serious in-
juries, "the TFB Safety Director
explained.
As part of a program for fire
prevention, the Texas Farm Bu-
reau Safety Department is pre-
senting this demonstration be-
fore the high schools of the
state.
DELL CITY—Reflections of an
El Paso fashion show..... Last
week the Popular received a
wonderful collection of Califor-
nia Designer dresses, Georgia
Bullock.
Most of the Spring and sum-
mer collection were a fresh,
bright and gay fabric--ranging
from light weight wool, to silk
to our much adored cotton. Co-
lors ranged all hues of every
shade of the rainbow and the
commentator of the show said
that in several styles they make
18 different colors.....a favor-
ite for anyone.
The Georgia Bullock clothes
are classic, simple, and very
durable. Most of them are what
I call a nine to nine outfit--it
is the kind of dress that you can
put on at nine in the morning
and look just as well at nine o'
clock in the evening. All of her
dresses are made for the active
woman, a Mother, a woman
who travels, and a woman who
wants a dress that takes little
care.
It seems that this year many
of the dresses are sleevelss, with
a soft "cresent" neckline. The
skirts are straight--with soft
tiny gathering at the w aist in
the front and back--just enough
to take aw ay from the clinging
look. Many are accented with
narrow belts, or with small cord
belts.
So the well dressed Mother or
member of the young set is to
be seen in blouse, skimmer,
knotched necked--classic dress-
es--all subtle light colors.
Everything from the little cot-
ton for the early part of the
day to the cotton ensemble for
a dinner party at night.....
See you next week.
