An Open Letter To An Atheist
Like all other Americans last week,
1 was amazed and thrilled at the jour-
ney io the moon by our three astro-
nauts, Col. Borman, Capt. Lovell and
Lt. Col. Anders. I watched as much
of the television coverage of their
historic flight as time would allow ...
there were some moments in my days
that were busy with other things,
like comforting sorrow in families
who had lost a loved one . . . and
leading people in worship on Christ-
mas Eve, and invoking the blessing
of God upon young people during the
marriage ceremony.
I read in the papers about your re-
sponse to the astronauts reading from
the book of Genesis as they circled
the moon, and I noted your objection
to their Chrjstjnas , Please
forgive me for not calling you by
name as I write this note to you, but
I hardly know what to use ... I
thought about your first name but
that Js supposed to be your Christian
name, and the things you have said
recently and back when you brought
suit to outlaw prayer in the public
schools cause me to feel that using"
your Christianjiame when addressing
you might insult you. I hope you will
forgive me for saying this, but de-
spite everything you have said and
done, God still loves you and probably
calls you by your Christian name.
But the chances are that you haven’t
heard him because I get the impres-
sion that you have tuned him out ...
Anyway, when you experience some
dark night of the soul and need help
above and beyond yourself, just call
oh him for help. I know he will re-
spond, for his steadfast love for all
his children endures forever.
