My mind is flooded
with childhood memo-
ries of holidays past as
Thanksgiving inches
ever closer. These mem-
ories blend together
seamlessly to create one
huge picture of love,
laughter, good food,
prayers, hugs and sub-
lime happiness.
The only “drama” our
family holidays held was
the oohhing and aahhing
over the abundance of
delicious food on our
table. We were not rich,
by any means, but we
had lots of good food
and even more love.
For as long as I can
remember, Daddy had a
tradition in our home.
He didn’t grow up with
this rule, but he insisted
the children were always
served first. Even when
we had prestigious
guests (like the preach-
er’s or elder’s families),
he would make an offi-
cial announcement that
the adults would go to
the back of the line and
the little ones would be
served first. This was
not just for holidays, but
at every single meal.
Every family has their
own traditions and spe-
cial practices on holi-
days and we had ours.
As I aged, I graduated
to the back of the line
and was proud to do it.
We chose to continue the
same tradition in our
own home with our chil-
dren and now with my
grandchildren.
Thanks, Dad, for the
wonderful lesson of
Jesus’ love to put others
first. May you
