In the navy the young men of the
Country, both in times of pence and In
times of war, secure liberal education*.
Their opportunities for travel nnd for
tight-seeing are greater than those of
lien employed in almost any other call-

CAUSES OF AUTOMOBILE AC-
CIDENTS.
It is probably no part of the
flhlty of the State Highway Com
mission to keep a record of auto-
mobile accidents. But neither is
it forbidden to do so. It occurs
to The News that, being free, it
might lie worth the Connuission s
trouble not only to gather the
statistics of automobile accidents
on the publie roads, hut to learn
the caust* of all such accidents to
the extent that that may be
tkabJe. Such an inquiry v
not lie altogether outside
Commission’s province. 1
known, in a general way, t!
good many accidents are <1
defective roathnaking, but tl
formation given by newspaper r -
ports does not usually supply tin
facts in such detail as
instructive to a body
supervisory authority
making. Heme such
might serve the Commission in a
■way that would repay th- trouble
of making them.
But they could be mini,- to ren-
der a direct public service of
much greater value, The News be-
lieves. Classified as to causes and
published from time to time, the
record would become a lesson in
safe driving. By showing the
causes of accidents, it would pres-
ent the dangers much mote im-
pressively than it is done by th-
publication of a tabulated state-
dents singly ns they occur. A
newspaper report of an automo-
bile accident resulting in dei'h
or injury doubtless has some warn
ing effect, but not nearly so much
as eould be expected from the
publication of a tbulated state-
ment from time to time showing
in aggregates the relative costs
of the several forms of careless-
ness and folly that best automo-
bile driver*.
