Neither team could speak
the other’s language, but
communication was not a
problem.
The Japanese boys proved
to be very polite, gracious
guests in all that they did.

The final winners of the
1977 World Series was the
New Bedford team from
Massachusetts. The team
sailed through the series
without a loss, winning the
final game with a 7-5 over
Lakeworth, Florida.
The Florida and New Bed-
ford teams appeared to be
the favorites of the local
crowd. Florida, as It was
the only team In the series
that came from "the bot-
tom"; that Is they did not
act as a host team along
any of the levels to get into
the competition. All
other teams in the
had been a host team
where along the line.
New Bedford was a favor-
ite of many, as they too
were somewhat of an "un-
derdog", having gotten here,
according to one of their
coaches, "on a lick and a
prayer". The team wore uni-
forms borrowed from their
local high school, and their
community supported them
with collections as they con-
tinued their winning ways.
The Japanese team played
an exhibition game on both
Saturday and Sunday after-
noon, with a win over Pasa-
dean each time.
The Japanese team, an
actual member of the Pony
League, is an exchange team
In a program which sees an
American team and Japanese
team alternating years visit-
ing the other's country.
The exchange program
was Initiated by Milton EXi-
Bane, the Assistant to Deputy
Commissioner for Japanese
Affairs for Pony Baseball.
DuBane, who works for a
Japanese Company has been
a member of the Pony organ-
ization for over 20 years.
He travels with the Ameri-
can team that goes to Japan,
as well as with the Japanese
team which comes to the
States.
